Anticipation, excitement, fear of the unknown; all can be present when a family receives their referral information. Adoption referrals have the potential to pull at both heart and head. Our pre-adoption services are designed to help parents understand best and worst case scenarios in order to help families determine if their referral fits with their dream for their family.
To aid you in this process, a thorough review of referral information can be obtained. Our service includes evaluation of translated medical information, developmental milestones, photos, videos and anything else you have received that you can discuss with the International Adoption Center medical director. We will discuss and answer questions about medical status, growth, development, preparation for travel, parenting tips, feeding plans, considerations for children with special needs, etc. You will receive a written evaluation as well with an overall summary of the child based on provided materials.
Bringing home a child takes preparation. In addition to a medical review, some families are interested in preparing themselves emotionally and psychologically for the upcoming experience of welcoming a new child through international adoption. If you are adopting a toddler or older child, a child with special health care needs, or already have other children at home, you might want to learn more about how to prepare for this transition. A consultation with the psychologist can address questions about facilitating the transition for your child and your family. It takes into consideration your individual family circumstances. Being prepared through information and reflection, and having a plan in place prior to the arrival of your new family member can decrease stress and free up your emotional resources for building a healthy relationship with your child once this special day arrives. This consultation can be arranged in person or per phone.
