Resources and Information

Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health is a member of the Injury Free Coalition for Kids. The coalition includes 42 trauma centers throughout the nation leading collaborative efforts in their own communities to prevent injuries to children. Coalition members and their local partners develop their independent plans on research, education and advocacy. To learn more about the injury-free projects in Indianapolis, visit our member page.


Here are some safety tips to keep your child safe:

  • Home Safety
    • General Tips
      • Don’t leave loose pillows, blankets, etc in crib due to suffocation risks
      • Cover all electrical plugs
    • Falls
      • Don’t put children on furniture unattended
      • Keep pathways clear
      • Put gates at top and bottom of stairs
      • Use window locks
    • Fire Safety
      • Check your smoke alarms once a month
      • Have a smoke alarm on each floor of the home
      • Change the batteries once a year
    • Poisoning
      • Keep harmful products locked up out of reach
      • Use safety latches on cabinets
      • Don’t call medicine candy
      • Keep these items out of reach:
        • Moth balls
        • Furniture polish
        • Cleaners
        • Weed killers
        • Insect/rat poisons
        • Paint thinners
        • Dishwasher detergent
        • Gasoline/kerosene
  • Child Passenger Safety
    • Always use an appropriate car seat for your child’s age and weight
    • Perform car seat checks to make sure they’re installed properly
    • Keep car seats rear-facing until the child is at least one year old and 20 pounds
    • Keep car seats forward-facing until the child reaches the maximum height and weight for the seat
    • Put the child in a booster seat from 4-8 years old
    • Have children under 12 ride in the back seat
  • Bicycle
    • Always wear a helmet
    • Walk bicycles across the street
    • Stop and look left, right and left again before crossing the road
  • Pedestrian
    • Always look left, right and left again before crossing the street
    • Walk, don’t run across the street
    • Cross at corners with crosswalks and traffic signals
    • Have children under 10 cross the street with an adult
    • Don’t play in streets
    • Walk facing oncoming drivers
  • Youth Sports
    • Make sure you always stretch
    • Wear correct equipment
    • Check equipment to make sure it’s functioning properly
    • Stay well hydrated
    • Don’t play while injured
  • Playground
    • Don’t roughhouse or push others while on jungle gyms, slides, swings, etc.
    • Use equipment correctly
    • Have adult supervision
    • Make sure shoes are tied
  • Firearm
    • Keep all firearms out of reach of children
    • Ammunition should be stored separately from firearms
    • Firearms should always be locked and left unloaded
