Injury Prevention

At Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health, we are committed to educating the public about the many common childhood injuries that can occur. We strive to make everyone aware of possible hazards and teach people about injury prevention methods. We do this by researching, coordinating, implementing and evaluating health and safety programs to help prevent further injuries within the community.

It is a common belief that injuries and accidents just happen, but in actuality many injuries are preventable. Through our evidence-based injury prevention programs, we strive to significantly decrease the severity, burden and incidence of injuries to children.

During the last 10 years, as the programs have grown, so has the demand and expectations of consumers, stakeholders and other injury prevention organizations to address the growing incidence rate of injuries. As with any public health concern, efforts to reduce injuries require a multifaceted approach. We partner with other community-based programs with a vested interest in reducing injuries to develop strategies targeting specific populations. This approach also allows us to more efficiently mobilize the community to make the necessary changes to reduce injuries in their neighborhoods.
