Camp Little Red Door

Description

Camp Little Red Door was founded in 1981 by Virginia Wagner, M.D. As a physician, breast cancer patient and Little Red Door Cancer Agency board member, Dr. Wagner wanted to create a special place for children diagnosed with cancer; a camp that could accommodate their special medical needs, get them out of a hospital setting and provide them with an inspiring camp experience. Thirty years later, Camp Little Red Door is thriving and fulfilling Dr. Wagner's dream.

Camp Little Red Door is a traditional, week-long residential camp experience held at Bradford Woods in Martinsville, IN during the 3rd week of July each year. This program is offered to 90 children, ages 8 to 18, who have been diagnosed with cancer or are in remission. Campers must be Indiana residents or be receiving treatment in Indiana. When space allows, a sibling or friend of the camper may also attend, where the two can create meaningful life-long memories despite a cancer diagnosis. The camp combines recreational, personal development and nature activities with 24-hour access to medical support. Daily activities are planned and formulated to each child's abilities and include horseback riding, swimming, hiking, archery, simulated rock climbing, arts and crafts and nature education. In addition, campers make life-long friends; many attend camp all eleven years they are eligible and others return to camp as counselors after they graduate.

In 2001, Little Red Door established the Robert T. Grand Leadership Academy, which provides the opportunity for 12 campers, ages 16 to 18, to develop leadership, mentoring and increased team building skills. During this specialized weekend before traditional camp, the teens participate in a series of challenge-based interactive activities such as canoeing, a high ropes course and rock climbing.
