Internship Requirements
Bachelor-level seniors or graduates in the following areas of study are encouraged to apply:
- Child Life
- Child Health
- Child Development
- Human Development or related course of study
Applicants must have a minimum of 100 hours of documented field experience with healthy, hospitalized and/or children with special needs.
College/university requirements, if applicable, must be submitted to Intern Coordinators.

Steps to Apply
1. Complete, Print, and Sign a Riley Child Life Program at Indiana University Health Internship Application. Applicants may also submit the Common Child Life Application from the Child Life Council, but should still submit the following requirements.
2. Include at least two letters of references on official letterhead, including 100 documented hours working with both healthy and ill children:
- One from a professor in your major field of study or current employer
- One from someone, unrelated to you, who is well acquainted with you and your work with children
- Note: additional documentation on official letterhead may be necessary if reference letters do not include the required documented hours.
3. Include one official university transcript (your university may forward the transcript to us).
4. Your most recent resume.
5. Type and Print the answers to the following list of questions:
- What is your career objective?
- What do you know about Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health?
- Why did you choose Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health for your internship?
- How would you describe the role of a Child Life Specialist?
- What experiences have you had in working with both healthy AND ill or special needs children?
- What strengths would you bring to this internship?
- In what areas do you feel you need the most help?
- What are your goals for your internship?

After the application is received:
- The Intern Coordinator(s) will review the completed Internship application.
- If qualified, the Intern Coordinator(s) will contact the applicant to schedule a date for an interview. Telephone interviews may be scheduled for out-of-state applicants who are unable to visit Riley at IU Health. A second interview may be deemed necessary.
- Following the interview process, the Intern Coordinator(s) will determine which applicants will be offered positions. All applicants will be informed.
