Riley Hospital for Children Radiology at Indiana University Health is a safe place to bring your child. We offer high-quality diagnostic imaging and provide premier patient care. We evaluate and update our equipment routinely to guarantee safe and accurate imaging. Our highly skilled fluoroscopy technologists have ongoing training and continuing education to provide the most up-to-date imaging.

Each child is unique. We provide customized care to fit the needs of your child and the imaging your child’s doctor needs. A Child Life therapist often assists to help reduce your child’s fear and anxiety during the visit. The therapist provides in-depth preparation and discussion prior to beginning the exam and may use distraction techniques during the exam.

Most fluoroscopy exams last 30 minutes, which may require some children to have sedation. The doctor who orders the exam will decide whether your child will need sedation.

Most fluoroscopic examinations also require the administration of a contrast medium. This may be through an IV (intravenous line—a tube that allows access to a blood vessel) or your child may need to drink a special liquid that can be mixed with various kinds of beverages. You will know ahead of time if your child needs to have contrast.

We specialize in pediatric diagnostic imaging procedures using live X-rays. All fluoroscopic exams are performed by our highly skilled team, which includes:

  • Radiologic technologists
  • Advanced fluoroscopy technologists
  • Radiologist assistants
  • Staff radiologists

All our fluoroscopy technologists are registered by the Indiana State Board of Health and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

We perform exams with the most advanced fluoroscopy equipment available, using low-dose pulsed fluoroscopy and the ALARA principle (doses that are As Low As Reasonably Achievable). The result is that your child remains safe while the doctor gets the clearest images possible.
