Riley at IU Health radiologists, certified technologists and registered nurses perform thousands of examinations each year. The department offers a full range of diagnostic and interventional imaging services including X-rays, CT scans, MR scans, cardiac MR scans, ultrasounds, nuclear medicine studies and fluoroscopy studies. Experts in diagnosing disease and injury in infants, children and adolescents, the radiologists work as part of a multidisciplinary team, along with the referring pediatrician or pediatric specialist, to provide the best possible care for children. Riley Radiology at IU Health pediatric radiologists are available to perform and interpret exams throughout the IU Health system.
Pediatric-Specific Equipment
Staff members at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health understand the importance of reducing X-ray exposure to children whenever possible. The pediatric radiologists have established specific exam protocols that reduce the X-ray dosage to young patients.
Riley at IU Health offers state-of-the-art radiology equipment that is specifically tailored to the needs of pediatric patients and includes the following:
- 1.5T MR scanners with the latest technology that permits rapid image acquisition and processing
- CT scanners that allow data to be viewed in different planes or three-dimensional images of structures such as the trachea or aorta
- Fluoroscopy rooms, including the latest low-dose, pulsed fluoroscopy for pediatrics that can reduce X-ray dosage up to 70 percent
- Ultrasound units with protocols specifically configured for pediatric imaging, including specialized exams of the hip, spine, head and pylorus
- Direct radiology (DR) units allowing for faster production of higher quality images and shorter exam times
On-site interventional radiology suite
Staffed by the only pediatric interventional radiologist in Indiana, Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health's pediatric interventional radiology (IR) suite offers percutaneous interven tions using image guidance in infants, children and adolescents. The suite, located in the Riley Radiology at IU Health, adjacent to Riley Outpatient Center at IU Health, offers all of the facilities and equipment necessary for IR procedures to be fully contained and performed in one location. IRP's neuroradiologists also utilize the IR suite for cerebral angiography procedures. In addition to four pre- and post-procedure rooms, the suite houses an anesthesia induction room, a family consultation area and a fully digital PACS workstation for reading exams and consulting with referring physicians.

Special Services for Procedures
Riley Radiology at IU Health staff includes specially trained pediatric nurses who focus on the sedation and recovery of babies and children. Behavioral strategies, sleep deprivation and medication are used to help children hold still long enough to finish imaging. In the event additional sedation is required for a longer or more complex exam, Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health's pediatric anesthesiologists are experts in using general anesthesia.
