CT Scan

Riley CT Scanning

A Computed Tomography (CT) scan is an X-ray exam which combines various X-ray images to create detailed cross-sectional views of the body in different layers. Riley CT takes pride in offering excellent patient care while providing the hightest quality exams.

CT scans show normal and abnormal structures in the body and assist in procedures by helping to accurately guide the placement of instruments or treatments. CT's are often the preferred method to:

  • Diagnose a source of pain caused by infections and inflammation (i.e. appendicitis, pancreatitis, etc.)
  • Cancer and subsequent treatment effects
  • Injuries

Our innovative CT scanners are monitored and maintaned regularly to ensure proper funtionality and safety for our patients.

Our Team

The CT department has over one hundred years of combined pediatric experience. Some of our technologists have been at Riley since we opened over 30 years ago. Every technologist is dedicated to providing each patient with individualized care because each child is different and requires special care. Our team will take the time to go above and beyond what is expected in order to achieve a quality exam while minimizing anxiety or fear. We accomplish this by letting the child touch the scanner and by using role-playing techniques, or distraction tools. However, in some cases, sedation may be needed and we have trained personnel who provide the safest possible care for each child. At Riley, we understand every child is unique so we provide tailored-care for each patient.

How to Prepare Your Child

After your child's appointment has been confirmed, it is important to prepare your child for the exam. Depending on what type of test is ordered, your child may not be able to eat or drink anything before the test. Your child may also need to drink or be injected intravenously with a tasteless contrast-agent. A Riley radiology team member will inform you if this is necessary for your child, and answer any questions regarding pre-scan eating.

Sedation (medicine to assist patients to relax and/or sleep) may be needed to help children remain still during the exam. This is only used when absolutely necessary. We also welcome other common distraction methods such as, music toys and parents staying in the room, to successfully have patients remain still.

For patients not admitted to the hospital, your doctor should receive the radiology report in 24-48 hours. For patients admitted to the hospital, the time is typically within 12 hours.

Where Quality Meets Qualifications

Our technologists are licensed by the State Board of Health and registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). The ARRT has strict procedural and ethical guidelines each technologist must meet and follow in order to become a registered technologist. All Riley CT technologists are also members of the Image Gently Campaign which promotes using the ALARA principle -- we use radiation doses that are As Low As Reasonably Achievable to create exams without compromising quality. Riley CT ensures patients receive the correct dose; we have been certified and accredited by American College of Radiology (ACR) for using the proper techniques.
