When visiting Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, there are several things you can do to make your visit more comfortable and successful. If your child is a transplant patient, there are a few extra things you need to do. Transplant surgery is very unique because you and your child are always “on-call” for surgery. This means you must be available at all times for surgery. You should make travel plans ahead of time and always be available for a phone call. You may receive this call at any time, day or night, to notify you that an organ match is available.
This call gives you and your transplant team a limited amount of time to decide whether to accept the donated organ. Upon notification of a potential organ donation, you must come to Riley immediately. To help you and your child be ready, pack a suitcase ahead of time along with an extra 24-hour supply of all medications.
