Planning Your Visit

When visiting Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, there are several things you can do to make your visit more comfortable and successful. Everything you need to know about your stay can be found in the For Patients and Families section of this site. Here we talk about some of the things that make Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health unique including, The Ronald McDonald House.

If your child is a transplant patient, there are a few extra things you need to do. Transplant surgery is very unique because you and your child are always “on-call” for surgery. This means you must be available at all times for surgery. You should make travel plans ahead of time and always be available for a phone call. You may receive this call at any time, day or night, to notify you that an organ match is available.

This call gives you and your transplant team a limited amount of time to decide whether to accept the donated organ. Upon notification of a potential organ donation, you must come to Riley immediately. To help you and your child be ready, pack a suitcase ahead of time along with an extra 24-hour supply of all medications.
