Indiana University Health Arnett, Inc. (“Arnett”) is committed to maintaining the privacy and security of the personal information provided to us. Regrettably, this notice concerns some of that information.

On April 10, 2013, we learned that an employee’s password-protected unencrypted laptop was stolen from the employee’s car the day before. The White County Sheriff’s Office was immediately contacted and we began an internal investigation. That investigation determined that the laptop contained patient information. Emails stored on the laptop’s hard drive may have contained patient names, dates of birth, physicians’ names, medical record numbers, diagnoses and dates of service. The laptop did not contain Social Security numbers, financial information, or patients’ medical records.

While Arnett has no reason to believe the information on this laptop has been improperly accessed or used, we believe as a precaution it was important to tell our patients this happened.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. Arnett takes very seriously its obligation to keep the information it maintains secure and we appreciate the trust that you place in us. Arnett is reviewing its policies and procedures to minimize the chance of such an incident occurring in the future. In addition, Arnett has mandatory privacy and security training for all of its workforce members.

We value our patients, and began mailing letters to the affected patients on May 10, 2013. If you believe you are affected but do not receive a letter by May 31, 2013, or if you have any questions regarding this incident, please call 1.888.722.0627 Monday through Friday between 9 am and 7 pm Eastern Time and enter or say the following telephone pass code 2121447 when prompted.

IU Health Arnett Hospital Achieves New Status as Accredited Chest Pain Center

IU Health Arnett Hospital has received Chest Pain Center with PCI Accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC), an international not-for-profit organization that focuses on transforming cardiovascular care by assisting facilities in their effort to create communities of excellence that bring together quality, cost and patient satisfaction.

“People tend to wait to call 911 when they think they might be having a heart attack,” says Dr. Jeetendra Patel, director of cardiology at IU Health Arnett. “With every second, more heart muscle dies. IU Health Arnett Hospital has created more efficient processes in order to save valuable time and heart muscle.”

The American Heart Association recommends that only 90 minutes passes between when a patient enters the hospital with heart attack symptoms to when they have cleared the blood clot causing the heart attack. IU Health Arnett Hospital has managed reduce this time to an average of only 54 minutes.

To become an Accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI, IU Health Arnett Hospital engaged in rigorous evaluation by SCPC for its ability to assess, diagnose and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack. To the Greater Lafayette community, this means that processes are in place that meet strict criteria aimed at:

	• Reducing the time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis and treatment
• Treating patients more quickly during the critical window of time when the integrity of the heart muscle can be preserved
• Monitoring patients when it is not certain that they are having a heart attack to ensure that they are not sent home too quickly or needlessly admitted to the hospital

Hospitals that receive SCPC accreditation have achieved a higher level of expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with symptoms of a heart attack. They emphasize the importance of standardized diagnostic and treatment programs that provide more efficient evaluation as well as more appropriate and rapid treatment of patients with chest pain and other heart attack symptoms.

Physician enjoys teamwork at hospital and home

Dr. Makana Edwards, interventional radiologist at IU Health Arnett, first witnessed the importance of teamwork in healthcare when he was 15 and injured his hand. From the surgeon to the nurses to the physical therapists, each member of the care team contributed to his recovery.

This group effort to help him heal inspired him to become a physician.

“I really enjoy helping people and working with others toward that same goal,” Edwards says. “Going through that team process from sickness to wellness is the best part of being a physician.”

Edwards has a great team of support at home as well: his wife and six children.

“Being a physician is awesome,” Edwards says, “but I found my true calling in being a husband and a dad.”

Edwards says his kids are so used to his career that they aren’t easily impressed by his work, even though interventional radiology uses some the latest medical technology.

When a family friend came over and fixed their washing machine, however, his kids were amazed.

“They said, ‘I wish you could fix that washing machine, Daddy,’” Edwards says.

Edwards spends his free time taking care of his kids. When asked how he balances his family life and the demands of becoming and being a doctor, he has a quick and simple answer:

“I have a really great wife.”

Dr. Lisa McTavish, family medicine physician at IU Health Arnett in Rossville, faced many changes when she moved from Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada to Rossville.

She went from a city of 700,000 people to a town of around 1700. Instead of seeing many young patients, she started treating older patients and entire families.

Fifteen years later, she’s very happy with her decision to practice in Rossville.

“I love how everybody knows everyone,” McTavish says. “They are such hardworking people.”

The close-knit community in Rossville allows McTavish to really get to know her patients and their families.

“The most rewarding part of being a physician is the relationships you build with people,” McTavish says. “You can really help them through life’s challenges.”

The move to Indiana helped McTavish and her husband Neil focus on their own family as well. In Canada, she could not make a very good living as a physician and both she and Neil worked many hours outside of the home.

“It’s not the way to live,” McTavish says. “We couldn’t see our kids.”

Because they moved to Indiana, Neil was able to stay home with their two daughters as they grew up and support them, even serving as a “roadie” for their youngest daughter who is a budding singer and songwriter.

McTavish likes to spend her free time with her family, volunteering, crocheting and reading.
