CARMEL – Indiana University Health North Hospital is the only hospital in the state of Indiana to offer the new, FDA-approved LINX® Reflux Management System, a treatment for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Offered through the Esophageal & Gastric Surgery Center at IU Health North Hospital, the new treatment can provide relief for the millions who suffer from GERD.

Following treatment with the LINX® System, the majority of patients substantially reduced or resolved their reflux symptoms, and eliminated use of their reflux medications. Severe regurgitation was eliminated in all patients, and nearly all patients reported a significant decrease in the need for medication. More than nine in 10 patients reported satisfaction with their overall condition after having the LINX® System.

A study published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) provides clinical evidence of the safety and effectiveness for Torax Medical’s LINX® Reflux Management System, a new, FDA-approved medical device. Numerous studies have shown that reflux symptoms persist in up to 40 percent of patients who receive acid suppression medications and that these symptoms have a negative impact on quality of life and healthcare utilization. The LINX® System allows surgeons to leave the stomach intact and support the weak sphincter with a small device placed around the sphincter. The device uses magnetic attraction to help prevent the sphincter from opening to reflux.

“We are very excited to offer innovative solutions for treatment of a very common disease,” stated Daniel McKenna, MD, Medical Director of the Esophageal & Gastric Surgery Center at IU Health North Hospital. “This is a much needed advancement for a disease that can be very debilitating. While medication can assist with alleviating symptoms of GERD, this medical device provides a solution to treat the underlying problem.”

For more information, you can visit iuhealth.org/gerdlinx.

To interview Dr. Daniel McKenna or to request animated video of the LINX System treatment, please contact Libby Springer at 317.688.2765.

The LINX Reflux Management System The LINX System is a small implant comprised of interlinked titanium beads with magnetic cores. The magnetic attraction between the beads augments the existing esophageal sphincter’s barrier function to prevent reflux. The device is implanted with a standard minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure and is an alternative to the more anatomically disruptive fundoplication, commonly used in surgical anti-reflux procedures. The LINX® Reflux Management System is indicated for those patients diagnosed with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) as defined by abnormal pH testing, and who continue to have chronic GERD symptoms despite maximum medical therapy for the treatment of reflux.

CARMEL, IN.—Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. Approximately 1.2 million Americans suffer a heart attack each year. The $25 Pocket EKG program and $49 Heart Scans offered by IU Health North Hospital and IU Health Saxony Hospital during the month of February can save lives, and is being offered in February in conjunction with Go Red for Women month to raise awareness about women’s heart health. The $49 heart scans will continue past February.

The Pocket EKG program is a screening for adults with a complete 12-lead EKG reading and blood pressure check. The patient receives the screening at IU Health North or Saxony Hospitals. Afterward, the results are reviewed by a cardiologist and the patient receives a letter with the EKG results, as well as a wallet sized medical identification card that provides important emergency information such as cardiac history and your baseline EKG. The $49 heart scans are a very quick exam with same-day preliminary results.

“We are happy to provide such an important service for minimal cost, especially during such an important month that raises overall awareness of heart health” states Dianna Cobb, RN, BSN, Manager, Cath Lab/Interventional Radiology at IU Health North and Saxony Hospitals. “The Pocket EKG card can assist in emergency situations and enhance proper diagnosis, as well as prevent unnecessary hospitalization. The heart scans give you a clearer picture of your heart health.”

The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology both recommend that all adults over the age of 40 have a baseline EKG. In addition, if you have other risk factors such as diabetes, smoking, and high blood pressure, you can schedule a $49 heart scan. Anyone is welcome to call the scheduling phone number to see if they qualify for an evaluation.
After 18 months of collaboration with hospitals from across the country, a team at Indiana University Health North Hospital is celebrating its success in improving patient safety and quality of care through its participation in Aligning Forces for Quality (AF4Q), a nationwide effort to improve health care in targeted communities. Nationally, ninety percent of hospital teams participating in Aligning Forces for Quality improved the quality of care for their patients in measureable ways.

The program is an initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the nation’s largest health care philanthropy and is staffed by experts at The George Washington University.

Since October 2010, IU Health North Hospital has made cutting-edge and lasting changes to further improve the quality of care provided to its cardiac patients, with the specific goal of reducing readmission within 30 days for heart failure patients.

Throughout the program, staff have piloted and tested quality improvement strategies, while collecting data that have been examined by patient race, ethnicity and language to determine if disparities exist.

“We have a culture of constant improvement, and this program has helped us fuel that culture and provide even better care to our patients,” said Toni Beymer, RN, MSN, NE-BC, Director, Cardiovascular and Critical Care Services at IU Health North Hospital.

Aligning Forces for Quality(www.forces4quality.org) is the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s signature effort to lift the overall quality of health care in targeted communities, reduce racial and ethnic disparities, and provide models for national reform.
