IU Health Saxony Hospital & Town of Fishers Partner to Provide Greater Emergency Response Access

FISHERS—Indiana University Health Saxony Hospital recently added a new onsite ambulance bay and sleeping quarters that will house Fishers Fire Department personnel beginning February 9. The result of a long-standing partnership between IU Health and the Town of Fishers, this addition to the IU Health Saxony Hospital campus will benefit residents living in the northeastern areas of Fishers by allowing Fishers Emergency Medical Services (EMS) staff to provide faster emergency response service and better access to emergency care.

“We are delighted with IU Health Saxony Hospital’s partnership with the Fishers Fire Department and are proud to offer improved emergency response services to our community,” said Jonathan R. Goble, president and CEO of IU Health Saxony Hospital.

The new living quarters and ambulance bay provide a solution to a response time challenge the Fishers Fire and Emergency Services Department previously faced. As an alternative to building a new $3 million fire station on the northeast side of Fishers, town leadership approached local hospitals to partner in a unique solution to EMS needs. This new partnership not only decreases response times and improves quality of care, but it also improves visibility in the community and saves taxpayers dollars. Even though it is a partnership with IU Health, patients will still be taken to the most appropriate hospital for their emergency care needs, or whichever hospital they choose.

“The partnership between IU Health and the Town of Fishers is a truly unique and innovative one,” said Fishers Town Council President John Weingardt. “Having emergency personnel housed at IU Health Saxony increases the efficiency of service delivery to the exit 210 area and promotes staff training alongside talented IU Health personnel at no cost to Fishers taxpayers.”

The partnership between Indiana University Health and the Town of Fishers began in 2007 as plans for building IU Health Saxony Hospital developed. The hospital then opened on December 1, 2011, and in 2012, IU Health Saxony Hospital purchased an ambulance for the Fishers Fire Department.

IU Health North & Saxony Offering Heart Screenings in February: $25 Pocket EKG & $49 Heart Scans

CARMEL, IN.—Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. Approximately 1.2 million Americans suffer a heart attack each year. The $25 Pocket EKG program and $49 Heart Scans offered by IU Health North Hospital and IU Health Saxony Hospital during the month of February can save lives, and is being offered in February in conjunction with Go Red for Women month to raise awareness about women’s heart health. The $49 heart scans will continue past February.

The Pocket EKG program is a screening for adults with a complete 12-lead EKG reading and blood pressure check. The patient receives the screening at IU Health North or Saxony Hospitals. Afterward, the results are reviewed by a cardiologist and the patient receives a letter with the EKG results, as well as a wallet sized medical identification card that provides important emergency information such as cardiac history and your baseline EKG. The $49 heart scans are a very quick exam with same-day preliminary results.

“We are happy to provide such an important service for minimal cost, especially during such an important month that raises overall awareness of heart health” states Dianna Cobb, RN, BSN, Manager, Cath Lab/Interventional Radiology at IU Health North and Saxony Hospitals. “The Pocket EKG card can assist in emergency situations and enhance proper diagnosis, as well as prevent unnecessary hospitalization. The heart scans give you a clearer picture of your heart health.”

The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology both recommend that all adults over the age of 40 have a baseline EKG. In addition, if you have other risk factors such as diabetes, smoking, and high blood pressure, you can schedule a $49 heart scan. Anyone is welcome to call the scheduling phone number to see if they qualify for an evaluation.

IU Health Saxony Hospital donates AEDs to prevent sudden cardiac arrest deaths in Fishers community

FISHERS, IN—When sudden cardiac arrest strikes, every second counts, and if not treated immediately, can be fatal. Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States killing 325,000 people each year. In Indiana, only about 1 person in 20 suffering sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital will survive. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is the only measure that can help reverse sudden cardiac arrest, if performed immediately.

In an effort to increase sudden cardiac arrest awareness and reduce the number of deaths resulting from it in communities throughout the state of Indiana, IU Health Saxony Hospital is providing a battery-operated AED to three local junior high schools in the Hamilton Southeastern (HSE) Schools and one church in Fishers.

Sudden cardiac arrest is a common but often misunderstood condition in which the heart abruptly stops pumping blood typically in response to the unexpected onset of a chaotic rhythm. The AED will advise the rescuer, through computerized voice prompts, when to deliver an electrical shock to the victim’s heart in order to restore a normal heart rhythm. Recently a student at HSE High School went into cardiac arrest while at school. Because of the quick thinking of his teacher and school nurses, along with their use of an AED, his life was spared.

These new AEDs will be placed at Fishers Junior High School, Hamilton Southeastern Junior High School, Riverside Junior High School and New Hope Presbyterian Church. IU Health Saxony Hospital staff will work with personnel at the schools and church to ensure effective AED placement and provide hands-on training, offering the latest guidelines and techniques in AED utilization.

“Sudden cardiac arrest can literally kill within seconds. The faster a normal heart beat can be restored, the greater the chance of survival; and as the state’s most comprehensive health care organization, it is important for us to work with our affiliates and partners to help save lives,” said Ed Harlamert, MD, medical director of cardiovascular services at IU Health Saxony Hospital. “It is our mission to help improve the health and quality of life for residents across the state of Indiana.”

According to the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation, an individual has an estimated survival rate of five percent when an AED is not available. However, defibrillation within three minutes increases the chance of survival 70 percent.

“We’re proud to partner with the Fishers Community to provide valuable health services and resources,” said Philip Dulberger, MD, CEO and CMO of IU Health Saxony Hospital. “Though we hope the AEDs never have to be used, we believe it will put teachers’, parents’ and students’ minds at ease knowing they are there.”

Sudden Cardiac Arrest statistics and facts:

SCA is a leading cause of death in the United States, claiming an estimated 325,000 lives each year.

SCA kills 1,000 people a day or one person every two minutes.

SCA most often occurs in patients with heart disease, especially those who have congestive heart failure and have had a heart attack.

It is estimated that 95 percent of cardiac arrest victims die before they reach a hospital or other source of emergency help.

As many as 75 percent of people who die of SCA show signs of a previous heart attack. 80 percent have signs of coronary artery disease.

SCA is NOT a heart attack.

Utilizing the Selenia® Dimensions® digital mammography system from Hologic, patients at IU Health Saxony Hospital benefit from the system’s exceptionally sharp breast images, an advanced ergonomic design providing more patient comfort, and a ground-breaking 3D tomosynthesis platform designed to deliver superior screening and diagnostic performance.

Breast tomosynthesis is a revolutionary technology that gives radiologists the ability to identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue. During a tomosynthesis exam, multiple, low-dose images of the breast are acquired at different angles. These images are then used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3D reconstruction of the breast.

“Improved visualization gives the radiologist the ability to detect cancers which may not have been detected using standard 2D mammography technology,” said Dr. George Trilikis, radiologist at IU Health Saxony Hospital. “Another big improvement for the patient, and a clear advantage for tomosynthesis technology, is a decreased need for call backs and additional images.”

There are more than 8,000 breast cancer screening sites in the U.S. Nearly 5,000 have at least one digital mammography system, though less than 100 have installed this newest generation of digital mammography equipment.

By offering women the latest technology in mammography, IU Health Saxony Hospital hopes to improve its ability to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage, which improves patient outcomes. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 97 percent.

IU Health Saxony Hospital is committed to the fight against breast cancer. In offering 3D breast tomosynthesis digital mammography, IU Health Saxony Hospital provides the latest in imaging quality.
