KNOX, Ind.–Starke County area residents are invited to learn more about keeping children safe at a free car seat safety event Saturday, June 22 from 10 am to 2 pm (Central time) at Indiana University Health Starke Hospital in Knox.

A certified child passenger safety technician will be available to offer car seat safety inspections to ensure car seats are age and size appropriate. Existing car seats will be checked for any cracks, wear or recall. Car seats that do not meet safety standards will be discarded and replaced free of charge.

The event is free and open to the public. No appointment or registration necessary. However, only a limited number of free car seats are available to be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Children must be present and restrained in a car seat upon arrival at the event.

Over 90 percent of child safety seats are used or installed incorrectly. In addition, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states car crashes are the No. 1 killer of children ages 1 to 12 in the United States. The best way to protect children in the car is to put them in the right seat at the right time and use it the seat the right way.

An Open House for the cancer rehabilitation STAR Program® will be offered to the public Wednesday, April 24 from 3 pm to 5:30 pm (Central time) at Indiana University Health Wellness & Rehabilitation Services at The Crossing, located at 1203 Washington St. in La Porte.

The event is free and registration is not required.

IU Health La Porte and Starke hospitals earned STAR certification in November 2012. The certification qualifies both hospitals to the services—a highly advanced cancer rehabilitation program helping survivors recover from the side effects and aftereffects of treatments.

Most of the services offered by the STAR (Survivorship Training and Rehabilitation) Program are covered by health insurance and are designed to rehabilitate survivors of all forms and stages of cancer. The program uses a multidisciplinary clinical approach, whereby a team of experts—rehabilitation medicine physicians, physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologists, dieticians, medical social workers and nurse practitioners—works with each patient on a personalized rehabilitation plan to increase strength and energy, alleviate pain and improve daily function and well-being.

STAR Program rehabilitation professionals can help with a wide variety of treatment-related conditions and their symptoms, including: pain, weakness, fatigue, shoulder problems, balance and gait problems, memory and concentration issues, swallowing and speech problems and lymphedema. Patients who have problems that they didn’t have before diagnosis, especially if they interfere with their ability to function or quality of life, are candidates for cancer rehabilitation.
