3D Mammography with Tomosynthesis

Doctors and scientists agree that early detection is the best defense against breast cancer. Mammograms play an important role in early detection because they can detect changes in the breast that are too small or subtle to be felt, but may be early signs of cancer.

Women who undergo routine mammograms at Indiana University Health Saxony Hospital now have the latest screening and diagnostic technology available to them. IU Health Saxony Hospital is the first hospital in Central Indiana and one of the first in the United States to offer 3D breast tomosynthesis for breast cancer screening.

Utilizing the Selenia® Dimensions® digital mammography system from Hologic, patients at IU Health Saxony Hospital benefit from the system’s exceptionally sharp breast images, an advanced ergonomic design providing more patient comfort, and a ground-breaking 3D tomosynthesis platform designed to deliver superior screening and diagnostic performance.

Breast tomosynthesis is a revolutionary technology that allows doctors to examine breast tissue one layer at a time, giving radiologists the ability to identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue.

Improved visualization gives the radiologist the ability to detect cancers which may not have been detected using standard 2D mammography technology. Using both tomosynthesis and traditional digital mammography together for screening has been proven to reduce “call-backs” and additional images.

During a tomosynthesis exam, multiple, low-dose images of the breast are acquired at different angles. These images are then used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3D reconstruction of the breast.

By offering women the latest technology in mammography, IU Health Saxony Hospital hopes to improve its ability to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage, which improves patient outcomes. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 97 percent.

IU Health Saxony Hospital is committed to the fight against breast cancer. In offering 3D breast tomosynthesis digital mammography, IU Health Saxony Hospital provides the latest in imaging quality.
