Radiology & Imaging

At Indiana University Health, our radiologists use advanced imaging technologies to diagnose and treat many conditions. Imaging techniques include X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasounds, computerized tomography (CT) and more.

Indiana University Health Saxony Hospital provides full-service diagnostic services. Our imaging services use the most appropriate radiological evaluations to deliver the highest quality of care to our patients.

IU Health provides safe care using the lowest doses of radiation possible for the most accurate results. Our physicians have advanced education in reading these images to make proper diagnoses. We also use leading edge imaging technology in our operating rooms so surgeons can perform minimally invasive procedures. These procedures have fewer risks than open surgeries and help you recover faster with less pain.

IU Health Saxony Hospital offers sophisticated, all-digital imaging and diagnostic services in a convenient, outpatient-friendly setting. This allows us to quickly diagnose your condition so that treatment, if needed, can begin as soon as possible. Digital imaging provides the most accurate picture for physicians to make a diagnosis.

To ensure quality, the American College of Radiology (ACR) accredits our MRI, CT, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and mammography departments. Through our partnership with Indiana University School of Medicine we conduct research into new imaging techniques that can lead to more accurate diagnoses and less-invasive treatments.

Services include:

  • Ultrasound
  • Mammography (screening, comprehensive screening and diagnostic)
  • 3D mammography with tomosynthesis
  • Stereotactic breast biopsy
  • Bone densitometry

3D Mammography with Tomosynthesis

Doctors and scientists agree that early detection is the best defense against breast cancer. Mammograms play an important role in early detection because they can detect changes in the breast that are too small or subtle to be felt, but may be early signs of cancer.

IU Health Saxony Hospital is the first hospital in Central Indiana and one of the first in the United States to offer 3D mammography with tomosynthesis for breast cancer screening. Patients benefit from technology that provides exceptionally sharp breast images, an advanced ergonomic design offering more patient comfort and a 3D tomosynthesis platform that features superior screening and diagnostic performance.

Breast tomosynthesis is a revolutionary technology that allows doctors to examine breast tissue one layer at a time, giving radiologists the ability to identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue.

Improved visualization provides the radiologist the ability to detect cancers which may not have been detected using standard 2D mammography technology. Using tomosynthesis and traditional digital mammography together for screening has been proven to improve cancer detection and reduce the need for additional images.

During a tomosynthesis exam, we acquire multiple, low-dose images of the breast at different angles. These images are used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3D reconstruction of the breast.

By offering the latest technology in mammography, IU Health Saxony Hospital hopes to improve its ability to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage, which improves patient outcomes. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 97 percent.
