Q: What prompted you to enter the medical field?
I chose the medical profession because I enjoy interacting with people and providing medical treatment at the same time. I feel successful when I bring a smile to the face of a troubled patient or feel the hug of a child who thinks I’m the greatest doctor.
Q: As a medical provider, what is one healthy practice you live by that you would recommend to others?
I try to make lifestyle choices that keep me healthy physically and emotionally. I enjoy outdoor activities with my children and building projects in my home. It might also be surprising to people that I know how to ride a unicycle.
Q: What has been your most memorable medical moment?
As a resident, I was awakened abruptly at 2 am by the hospital pager. I ran down the hall to the OB Department and delivered a baby (precipitous delivery!) before the OB attending could arrive. It was my first delivery as a resident. Fourteen years later, a mother and her teenage son walked into my office and said “Do you remember the night that you delivered a baby ... ?” How could I forget?
Q: Who has been or is your greatest influence in life?
I have been fortunate to have several mentors in my life to direct me educationally, socially and spiritually. To get inspired, I often listen to traditional gospel music.
Dr. Kamal Girgis received his medical degree and completed a residency at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
