Amy Kessens, MD

Joining the Arlington office in August 2014

Dr. Kessens grew up in Bloomington and is a graduate of DePauw University.  She earned her medical degree at the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed a pediatric residency at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.  In 2010 and 2013, she participated in the IU-Kenya program for which she traveled to Kenya for two months and worked at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.  There, Dr. Kessens learned about global health and led ward rounds and taught interns and medical students.  Her husband, Kyle, is a pharmacist whom she met in Kenya when they were both students participating in the IU-Kenya program. 

Outside of work, she enjoys traveling, IU basketball, being active outdoors, and spending time with friends and family.

Jason Simmonds, MD

Board certified Pediatrics

Dr. Simmonds is a native of Ellettsville and graduated from Edgewood High School in 1992. He then went on to get degrees at Indiana University-Bloomington (1996) and the IU School of Medicine (2001). He completed his pediatric residency training at the IU School of Medicine/Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in Indianapolis in 2004. He practiced at Associated Physicians & Surgeons in Terre Haute, Ind. for two and a half years before making the move back to his hometown.

Dr. Simmonds and his wife, Kristina, who is also an Ellettsville native, have one son, Evan. In his spare time, he enjoys watching, and often coaching, his son's sports teams, attending IU basketball and football games, and playing the occasional pick-up basketball game.

Kelly Thomas

Kelly earned a Bachelor degree in Psychology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania followed by a Master of Science in Educational Psychology at Indiana University Bloomington.  She is currently working on a doctoral degree in School Psychology with a minor in Counseling at IU Bloomington.

Kelly has experience in providing long-term individual, group and family counseling services to children and families with a focus on play therapy and mindfulness-based interventions.  She has worked most with children who have experienced complex trauma, and has taught college-level psychology courses on topics such as child development.

John Wrasse, MD

Board certified Pediatrics

Dr. Wrasse was born in Lincoln, Neb. After college, Dr. Wrasse moved to Bloomington where he met and married his wife Lisa. After working several years with students at Indiana University, Dr. Wrasse became a student again himself, graduating from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 2005. he completed his pediatric residency at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital in 2008.

Dr. Wrasse and his wife have two daughters, Anna and Lucy, both adopted from China. Dr. Wrasse enjoys spending time with his family, bicycle riding (with helmets. of course!), hiking, and canoeing.

Jamie Bohnke, CPNP

Jamie is a certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She earned her Masters of Science in Nursing degree from Indiana University. She is a member of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and is a certified Lactation Resource Specialist.

Lori Frasher, CPNP

Lori has been a Hoosier since birth, having been born and raised in southern Indiana. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and a Master of Science degree in Nursing from Indiana University.  Lori joins our office from Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, where she has been a nurse since 2005.  At Riley Hospital, she worked on general pediatric floors, as well as the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit. Lori worked as a traveling nurse, caring for children and their families in Tucson, Los Angeles, and New York City.  She also loves spending time at Camp Riley, where she has worked as a camp nurse each summer.

Lori enjoys spending time with her husband and young son, as well as their large extended family. She loves the Hoosiers and the Colts, as well as cooking and traveling.   

Greg Hanson, MD

Dr. Hanson earned his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed a pediatric residency at Akron Children’s Hospital. 

Rachael Mullis, DNP, CPNP

Amy Simpson, MD

Board certified in Pediatrics

Dr. Simpson was born in Kansas City and attended college and medical school at the University of Kansas. She completed her Pediatric Residency at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis. From 1991-2001 she was a pediatrician with Sparks Medical Foundations in Fort Smith, Arkansas. In 1996, she was appointed a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University Arkansas College of Medicine - AHEC Fort Smith.

Dr. Simpson moved to Bloomington in August 2001 and joined Southern Indiana Pediatrics as a clinic physician. She is a Board certified pediatrician, and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

She enjoys raising her three children as well as music, reading and gardening. Dr. Simpson is a member of the Bloomington Community Band as well as Bloomin' winds, a woodwind quintet.

Elda H. Simpson, MD

Board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Nephrology

Dr. Simpson grew up in Glasgow, Ky. She attended Indiana University as an undergraduate and completed medical school at Tulane University in New Orleans. From 1972 to 1975, she completed her pediatric residency at Columbia University in New York, then went on to a kidney fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. She was a pediatric nephrologist at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago for two years before going into private pediatric practice in a Chicago suburb. After 25 years there, Dr. Simpson and her husband, David, moved to Bloomington. She has worked full-time in the Bedford office since May 2005. The Simpsons have two grown sons, Brian and Eric.

George W. Sorrells, MD

Board certified in Pediatrics

Dr. Sorrells finished his undergraduate work at Indiana University in 1959, and graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1962. He was an intern at Hurled Hospital in Flint Michigan and completed his pediatric residency at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in Indianapolis. Dr. Sorrells served as a staff physician at IU Health Bedford Hospital from 1965 to 1993. From 1993 until 1997, Dr. Sorrells had his own private practice in Bedford. In 1997, Dr. Sorrells joined Southern Indiana Pediatrics, and is on the visiting clinical staff at Riley at IU Health.

He is currently a trustee of the First Christian Church in Bedford. Dr. Sorrells is a founding and current member of the Mitchell Community School Scholarship Foundation, and a member of the Clinical Advisory Committee of the State's Hoosier Health Wise Program. He is also a member of the American Medical Association, Indian State Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Sorrells and wife have four children and seven grandchildren. He and his wife live on a farm near Mitchell. He enjoys attending medical post graduate meetings, occasional travel and working on the farm.

Dr. Rebecca Beck is board certified in pediatrics. She received her medical degree from University of Chicago and completed her pediatric residency at Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association. Outside of her time taking care of children, Dr. Beck enjoys singing and hiking in the woods with her husband and dogs.

Dr. Franklin graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed her residency training in Pediatrics at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health before practicing on the south side of Indianapolis. She is board certified in Pediatrics and has been a part of Southern Indiana Pediatrics since 2000. Dr. Franklin and her husband Karl, are the parents of two sons, Alex and Garrett. Together they enjoy outdoor family activities, camping and sports.

Richard Malone, MD

Dr. Malone has been a Bloomington resident since 1989. He is a graduate of Butler University and the Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his pediatric residency at Riley Hospital for Children at the IU Medical Center in Indianapolis. He is board certified in Pediatrics and his certification was renewed in 2013. Dr. Malone lives in the Bloomington area with his wife, Rene. He has four children, Alex, Angie, Clara and Hank. Dr. Malone may occasionally be spotted onstage playing blues harmonica in Bloomington and afar.

Jane Lucas, CPNP

Jane is a native of Bloomington, Indiana. She graduated with her BSN degree from Indiana University Nursing School in 1976. She worked in the intensive care unit at Riley Hospital for one year, and then worked for Marion County Health and Hospital Corporation as a Public Health Nurse for 2 years.

She moved to Bloomington in 1981 and was a stay at home mom until she decided to pursue her Masters Degree in Nursing and become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She finished her degree in 1996 and began working for Southern Indiana Pediatrics in August 1996 at the new Landmark location. Jane's favorite hobby is walking, and reading, when there is time!

David Esarey, MD

Dr. Esarey was raised in southern Indiana. He graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1976 with a degree in Biological Sciences and Chemistry and from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1980. He completed his residency in Pediatrics at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in 1983. He practiced medicine in Shelbyville, Ind. for seven years where he was attending physician for a children's nursing home as well as working in a multispecialty clinic. While in Shelbyville, he received the Indiana Sertoma Service to Mankind Award. He moved to Bloomington in 1990 where he had a solo practice for 10 years. Dr. Esarey joined our staff in 2000. He began seeing patients on a full-time basis in our Bedford Office in January 2001 and has been in our Landmark office full-time since April 2004. He has a special interest in treating children with Autism, Attention Deficit Disorder, and developmental delays, as well as children with multiple handicaps.

Dr. Esarey has two sons, Davey and Jonathan. His hobbies include singing (primarily classical and Gospel music), reading (especially mysteries and science fiction), church work, genealogy, and golf. He is a member of the Bloomington Chambers Singers.

Debbie J. Hall. MD

Dr. Hall was born in Paoli, Ind. and grew up there. She graduated from Purdue University in 1982 with a degree in Medical Technology. After graduation, she worked as a medical technologist and then laboratory supervisor at Bedford Medical Center and Edgewood Clinic in Bedford. She worked in the laboratory for 13 years during which time her three children were born. During this time, Dr. Hall decided she wanted to be a physician and child advocate for the children in her area of southern Indiana.

She began medical school at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1995 and completed her degree in 1999. After medical school, she completed her residency in pediatrics at Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, Ky. She joined Southern Indiana Pediatrics in the summer of 2002 and works out of our Landmark Office in Bloomington doing mostly urgent care for children.

Dr. Hall lives in Paoli with her husband Stanley.  She has three children and 2 grandchildren, and she loves it when all of her family are together.  Her hobbies are horseback riding and camping, knitting, cooking and gardening.

James Laughlin, MD

Dr. Laughlin was born in Dayton, Ohio, and has been a Hoosier since age 11. He graduated from Indiana University and the Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Pediatrics and a Pediatric Pulmonary Fellowship at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Chest Physicians and a member of the American Thoracic Society. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the Indiana State Medical Association and the Monroe-Owen Medical Society. He currently serves on the AAP national Committee of Practice and Ambulatory Medicine.

Dr. Laughlin is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics for the Indiana University School of Medicine and enjoys teaching medical students. He is active in IU Health Bloomington Hospital Medical Staff leadershipand is a past Chief of the Medical Staff and a past member of the IU Health Bloomington Hospital Board of Directors. He is a current member of the Bloomington Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. He is very involved in community and school efforts to improve the health of the children of Bloomington and serves on the MCCSC Health Wellness Committee and is Medical Consultant for MCCSC. He is Bloomington Medical Director of Pediatrics, Riley Physicians, a partner of IU Health Southern Indiana Physicians.

He has three sons, Bill, Charlie and John, and a daughter, Kelly. His hobbies include jogging, water sports, reading and eating. His wife, Catherine, is an Associate Professor in Applied Health Science at IU, and has two daughters, Olivia and Sophia.

Audra Mazdzer, MD

Dr. Mazdzer was born and raised in Upstate New York and graduated from Williams College in Massachusetts. She completed medical school and residency at the University of Vermont, and then joined a private pediatric clinic in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she worked for several years. She moved to Bloomington in 2003 when her husband accepted a faculty position at the IU School of Education. Dr. Mazdzer is board certified in Pediatrics and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She has three daughters, Hannah, Kira and Zoe. She enjoys spending time with her family, being involved in her church, and playing sports, especially soccer and basketball.

Debra McDaniel, MD

Dr. McDaniel has been a Hoosier since birth, growing up in southern Indiana. She graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed pediatric residency training at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in Indianapolis. After leaving the residency program at Riley, she continued her ties with the children's hospital by acting as an associate clinical professor of pediatrics on a part-time basis for an additional four years, while beginning private practice in the Bloomington area.

She is a member of the Indiana State Medical Association and the Monroe-Owen County Medical Society and a diplomat of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is board certified in Pediatrics.

Dr. McDaniel is very interested in the care of sick newborns and premature infants. She was one of the physicians in attendance at the birth of the Gaither quintuplets, working to stabilize the tiniest quint. Her special interests include working with children with diabetes and seizure disorders. She presently serves as the pediatrician for many of the Stonebelt group homes in Bloomington.

Her husband, Terry, is an associate professor at Indiana State University. They have two grown sons and now four grandsons and a granddaughter, all of whom have provided a wonderful background in PRACTICAL pediatrics!

Scot Moore, MD

Dr. Moore is a (hold your breath Bloomington!) Purdue graduate who grudgingly attended the Indiana University School of Medicine. He finished a combined Internal Medicine/Pediatric residency at Vanderbilt University in June 1995, then stayed at Vanderbilt an additional year as Chief Resident of Pediatrics. His wife, Ann, is a psychologist with expertise in learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder. They have two daughters, Megan and Katie, and two sons, Matthew and Jackson.

Brechin Newby, MD

Dr. Newby was born and raised in Bloomington. She attended Indiana University where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and was very active in the college community. She then went on to the Indiana University School of Medicine where she discovered her love for the field of Pediatrics. She completed her pediatric residency at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. Dr. Newby stayed on as Chief Resident of Pediatrics at Riley, Methodist, and Wishard Hospital after completing her residency. She loves being back in Bloomington with her husband and two children.

Brooke Barada, CPNP

Brooke is a certified pediatric nurse practitioner. She earned a Bachelor and a Master of Science degree in Nursing from Indiana University in Indianapolis, IN. Before joining the Riley Physicians team, Brooke worked as a member of Stem Cell Transplant Unit Resource Team at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health and the PICC team at Bloomington Hospital.

Esther Briggs, CPNP

Esther received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Northeastern University (1987), and her Master’s Degree in Maternal Child Health from Simmons College and Harvard School of Public Health (1995). Esther practiced as a Nurse Practitioner at Boston Medical Center (1996 – 2006) in the Pediatric Primary Care Practice and in the Newborn Nursery where she was Coordinator of Clinical Programs and Education and Clinical Instructor of Pediatrics for Boston University School of Medicine. Her prior experience includes working as a Staff Nurse in Adult Cardiology and in Labor and Delivery at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston. Esther is an internationally board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC). She took the exam in 1999 and recertified in 2010.  Her professional areas of interest include breastfeeding, newborn medicine, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), with a growing interest in mental health. She was born in Montreal, Canada and lived in Boston, Massachusetts before moving to Bloomington.  She speaks German and Spanish, and enjoys cooking, working with clay, and being an Auntie.

Nichole Hickman, CPNP 
 

Nichole is originally from Evansville, Ind. and moved to Bloomington in 2000. She received her BSN from the University of Southern Indiana in 1998 and her MSN and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner certificate from IU in 2002. Nichole is certified as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner from the National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners.
 

Susie Voland, CPNP

Susie has been a life-long Brown County resident. Susie attended Wishard School of Nursing and got a BSN from Purdue. She worked at IU Health Bloomington Hospital for several years in the Pediatric and Nursery Departments and then decided to return to school to become a Nurse Practitioner. She received her Master’s Degree from Indiana University and is certified as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner by the National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. She has a deep love for children and enjoys caring for all age groups.

Kathryn Wright, CPNP

Kathryn grew up in Evansville, Ind. All of her nursing education is from Indiana University. Kathryn and her husband, Dennis, have lived in Bloomington for 12 years. Kathryn and Dennis have two children, Annie and Sam. Prior to joining Southern Indiana Pediatrics, Kathryn was practicing in Bedford.

Justin Fuller, MD

Joining the Martinsville office in July 2014

Dr. Fuller earned his medical degree at the Ohio State University College of Medicine. He completed a pediatric residency at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health. 

Dr. Fuller is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He has a special interest in healthcare for underserved populations, international health, and evidence based medicine.

He and his wife Ashley are members of their local church, and enjoy spending their free time staying active together and hanging out with friends and family.

Jian Li, MD

Dr. Li received her medical degree from the Shanxi Medical School in China and a residency at New York Methodist Hospital. She is board certified in pediatrics.

Priyanka Sherchan, MD, MBBS

Dr. Scherchan earned her medical degree from the Nepal Medical College in Kathmandu, Nepal. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
