Pathologists play a vital role as part of the patient's primary healthcare team. And while they don't generally interact with patients, patients are impacted by their work more often than they realize. In fact, if you've ever had a lab test done, you've been touched by pathology.
More than 40 pathologists are on staff at IU Health Pathology Laboratory, and more than seven million tests are evaluated each year.
With such a high demand, the IUHealth Pathology Laboratory runs every minute of every day. Doctors need the freshest results possible and the results of some tests can determine a life or death treatment regimen.
The pathologists evaluate tests from the common to the marrow transplantation. There is a high degree of subspecialty and many unique services, including:
- A tissue bank
- The only central Indiana lab that does comprehensive amniotic fluid studies to evaluate fetal lung maturity
- The only virology lab in the area which can isolate and identify the causes of uncommon viral illnesses
- Forensic services for all of Marion County and surrounding counties.
- Extensive renal biopsy capabilities.
