Indiana University Health offers comprehensive palliative care to help patients and their families facing serious illness. We treat people with both chronic illnesses that cause suffering or decrease quality of life, and those who may be approaching the end of their lives.
Palliative care can be appropriate for anyone diagnosed with a serious condition and can begin at any stage in the disease. It can be offered at the same time as curative treatments. Serious illnesses commonly requiring palliative care include, but are not limited to, cancer, heart failure, liver failure, kidney failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), and various neurological conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson’s disease.
At Indiana University Health University Hospital, our Palliative Care team of physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, social workers and spiritual care providers offers services to help alleviate physical, mental and spiritual suffering. By talking with you about your hopes, plans and fears, we hope to help establish what is important for you.
Our Palliative Care team offers symptom management, goals of care discussions and spiritual and psychosocial needs.
We also help manage symptoms associated with serious illness such as pain, shortness of breath, nausea, constipation, depression, anxiety, loss of appetite, fatigue, itching and other symptoms that negatively affect quality of life. We help with treatment planning by helping to navigate treatment options, or by organizing a family meeting with your healthcare team.
The Palliative Care team at IU Health recognizes the emotional struggles that patients endure and is prepared to assist to best serve patients’ needs with spiritual care and grief support. Our role is to help you through what can be a very difficult time and make it easier.
