Kidney transplant patients are very unique because they have the ability to receive a living donor kidney. Often times, the living donor that is willing to donate isn’t an organ match. Instead of wasting a potential donor, the Alliance for Paired Donation (APD) steps in to connect these mismatched organs.
Potential recipients and their donors are entered into an electronic pairing system with others in the same situation. When the computer finds a match for the incompatible pairs, the donors do a “swap,” allowing both of their recipients to receive a transplant. Additionally, several donor chains may arise out of APD when a person wants to donate a kidney to a stranger who is registered in the APD.
