Childbirth Education

Childbirth can be one of the most meaningful times in life, not only for parents, but for extended family and friends as well.

To help prepare for this experience, IU Health West Hospital offers a variety of childbirth classes designed to educate and prepare those waiting to welcome new life into the world.

Advanced Labor Support

IU Health West’s Advanced Labor Support class offers extensive information for those parents-to-be who wish to know more about childbirth preparation techniques. Do you want to go “natural” (without drugs)? Do you want to be on your feet and active in your labor as long as possible?

Advanced Labor Support provides more extensive information about breathing and relaxation in labor, massage, acupressure and other techniques. Please bring a blanket and pillows to relaxation practice.

Please note: It is recommended that you schedule this class after you have completed a labor series or fast track childbirth preparation class.

Postpartum Depression Support

Women often say meeting others with the Baby Blues (also known as a Perinatal Mood Disorder, or PMD) is a lifeline in their recovery. Many say that being among others who understand just what they're going through helps to take away the loneliness they feel. IU Health West offers Postpartum Depression Support—a group designed to provide support, encouragement and understanding between new moms—weekly at the Plainfield Recreation and Aquatic Center in Plainfield.

The meetings are casual and usually small. Each woman introduces herself and, if comfortable, shares a little of her story. However, no one is pushed to talk...as some women prefer to just listen. But remember, your experience and insight are valuable and could help someone else in the room. Women often find similar concerns and share ideas. The focus of the group is on healing, acceptance and starting or maintaining good self-care habits.

There is no cost to participate, though advance registration is requested. We invite you to join us for support, encouragement and understanding. Please call 317.962.8191 to learn more about Postpartum Depression Support at IU Health West Hospital, or to register for this free group.

Breastfeeding Support Group

IU Health West offers a weekly Breastfeeding Support Group. The group meets each Monday (barring scheduling conflicts brought on by holidays and/or school vacations) from 10 am to 11:30 am in the Garden Classroom at IU Health West.

Guests have the opportunity to meet other breastfeeding mothers, share valuable information and know-how and form a truly unique community of support. One-on-one lactation support from IU Health West's lactation specialists is also available.

There is no cost to attend the Breastfeeding Support Group, and no advance registration is necessary. Refreshments are served, and siblings are welcome. You may attend as often or as little as you like. When you arrive for the meeting, simply check in at IU Health West’s Welcome Desk (located just inside the Main Entrance) and we will be happy to direct you.

If you have specific questions about the group, or would like to inquire about possible schedule changes due to holidays or school breaks, please call the IU Health West Lactation department at 317.217.3639.
