Hospitalist

If you are admitted to an Indiana University Health hospital, one of our experienced hospitalists will be available to help coordinate your care throughout your stay. A hospitalist is a physician who specializes in the practice of hospital medicine, a medical specialty dedicated to the delivery of comprehensive medical care to hospitalized patients. This is especially helpful if you require lengthy or multiple hospital stays for a complex disease such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, heart failure or a pulmonary illness.

When you receive healthcare services at Indiana University Health West Hospital, you have the benefit of our team of hospitalists whose goal is to ensure your patient care experience is as seamless as possible. We have several full-time hospitalists on staff who partner with both our adult and pediatric patients to provide a well-rounded, coordinated approach to patient care.

Our hospital-based physicians also work together with your primary care physician to keep him or her informed of your admission, treatment, discharge and any necessary follow-up treatment. They collaborate with departments throughout the hospital and ensure both patients and loved ones are given updates throughout a patient's stay. Our hospitalists do not have a practice outside the hospital, so their entire focus is on caring for you while they you are at IU Health West Hospital.

Pediatric Hospitalists

IU Health West Hospital understands that receiving the highest quality of care for your child is your top priority. That is why we offer the services of pediatric hospitalists (doctors who specialize in the care of newborns and hospitalized children) to partner with your child's pediatrician in providing care.

Our pediatric hospitalists are committed to providing you with thorough and timely information during your child's stay, and to providing your pediatrician with similar updates and a complete report when your child is discharged. This information sharing helps assure what we call the "continuum of care," meaning that all medical professionals taking care of your child know everything they need to know about what occurred during your child’s hospital stay, and what needs to happen once your child is discharged.

Our pediatric hospitalists are members of the Indiana University School of Medicine and Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health faculty. While they are part of a large group of Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health pediatric experts covering inpatients at all IU Health metropolitan hospital campuses, you will get to know a small, core group of hospitalists based at IU Health West Hospital.

The hospitalists are aided by our expert team of newborn and pediatric nurses, who are focused on providing relationship-centered care in a soothing, comfortable healing sanctuary environment. Caregivers from the full range of clinical services—including diagnostics, imaging, respiratory, laboratory and rehabilitation—provide additional support.

If you have any questions about our hospitalist service, or about any aspect of your child's care while he or she is a patient at IU Health West Hospital, please don't hesitate to ask. We understand that having a child in the hospital can be extraordinarily stressful, and we are here to help in any way possible.
