Our team believes that breast milk gives a baby the best possible start in life. We offer lactation support from registered nurses who are board certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners, the gold standard in lactation care. All of our nurses have received special training to help mothers who choose to breastfeed do so successfully. Of course, we respect the wishes of each of our patients, offering support and education whether mom chooses to breast or bottle feed.
IU Health West Hospital offers a weekly breastfeeding support group. The group meets each Monday in the Garden Classroom at IU Health West Hospital, excluding scheduling conflicts brought on by holidays and/or school vacations. Guests have the opportunity to meet other women who are breastfeeding and share valuable information and know-how, forming a truly unique community of support. We offer one-on-one lactation support from the certified IU Health West Hospital lactation specialists.
There is no cost to attend the breastfeeding support group and no advance registration is necessary. We serve refreshments, and siblings are welcome. You may attend as often or as little as you like. When you arrive for the meeting, simply check in at the IU Health West Hospital welcome desk (located just inside the main entrance), and we will be happy to direct you to the Garden Classroom.
If you have specific questions about the group or would like to inquire about possible schedule changes due to holidays or school breaks, please call the IU Health West Hospital Lactation department at 317.217.3639.
For mothers who require a C-section delivery, operating suites are located right in the Maternity Center at IU Health West Hospital, and an anesthesiologist is in the building 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If a surgical delivery is necessary, the team can begin the procedure at a moment's notice, while loved ones remain close by. Our anesthesiology staffing also means no delays for mothers who choose to have an epidural to help ease a vaginal delivery.
