At Indiana University White Memorial Hospital, our anesthesiology specialists are dedicated to making sure you feel comfortable and as pain free as possible when you need a procedure or when you are dealing with a chronic (ongoing) or acute condition.

We provide sedation, surgical anesthesia and pain management for inpatient and outpatient services. Our care includes your safety whether you need sedation before, during or after a surgery or procedure, particularly in the area of endoscopy (a procedure where a long, flexible tube with a light and camera is used to view your digestive tract). We put our patients first by doing all we can to maximize comfort and minimize recovery time.

In the hospital, our anesthesia care team provides services for a wide variety of patients. Our anesthesia staff uses the latest knowledge to provide anesthesiology services while collaborating with other specialists, including gastroenterologists performing colonoscopies.

Our partnership with the Indiana University School of Medicine allows our physicians to stay on the forefront of medicine and give you more options for sedation and pain relief.

Inpatient Services

Monitored Anesthesia Care

Some surgeries do not require full sedation. In these cases, monitored anesthesia care is a good option. Often called conscious sedation, monitored anesthesia care relieves discomfort and helps you relax.

Monitored anesthesia care combines varying levels of intravenous (through the vein) anesthesia along with local anesthesia used in the specific body region where a procedure is being performed. At IU Health White Memorial Hospital, we use monitored anesthesia for procedures done under radiologic guidance and minor surgeries in which the patient needs to lie still for more than a few minutes.

Monitored anesthesia care offers fewer side effects than general anesthesia, such as nausea and sore throat and does not require the use of a breathing tube.

Outpatient Services

At IU Health White Memorial Hospital we offer a robust outpatient endoscopy program, including diagnostic colonoscopy and upper endoscopies (EGD procedures).

Conscious sedation is used to help you relax and remain comfortable during endoscopic procedures. This means you remain awake during a colonoscopy or other endoscopic test, but you may not remember parts of the procedure because of the sedation.

We work closely with our gastroenterology specialists to ensure your comfort during an endoscopic procedure.
