Biography

Dr. Brian Christie grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. He attended Dartmouth College and lived in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where he developed a strong interest in serving patients in need. He subsequently attended Duke School of Medicine where he was a Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellow. He then moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where he completed his residency training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, met his wife, Patti, and developed a love for the Midwest.

He then traveled to Boston, Massachusetts to obtain a Masters in Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health. He then completed his fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at Stanford University, before returning to the Midwest and joining the faculty at Indiana University.

Christie enjoys reconstructive surgery because of the ability to help restore patients’ sense of wholeness after trauma, cancer removal, or arthritis. He is particularly interested in hand and wrist surgery because of the immense importance of the use of one’s hands in everyday life. He performs clinical research investigating outcomes in hand and wrist surgery, and in surgeon decision-making, and has multiple book chapters and publications in top reconstructive surgical journals. He also has a strong interest in global health, where he works to teach and provide care to patients in need across the world.

Outside of the hospital, he enjoys spending time with his wife and their growing family. He is an avid scuba diver and snowboarder. Though he enjoys IU sports, he is a Badger at heart!

Christie places great importance in patient-centered care, and in shared decision-making when discussing difficult surgeries and challenging conditions. He enjoys taking the time to explain a patient’s condition to them, and ensure that they understand the options, both surgical and nonsurgical, available to them. He is committed to excellence in the quality of care he and his team delivers.
