IU Health Holds 9th Annual Day Of Service

September 14, 2017

INDIANAPOLIS — Friday, Indiana University Health team members in Indianapolis will come together to give their time and talents through community service projects around the city for the 9th annual IU Health Day of Service.

This year’s projects were inspired by the state’s health. Nutrition and healthy weight remains a top community health need for IU Health. Indiana now has the 10th highest adult obesity rate in the nation and nearly 14% of children are obese.  The challenges of obesity are endemic and a direct correlation to Indiana’s rates of diabetes, hypertension and obesity-related cancers.

Motivated by team members’ desire and passion to serve their local communities and make an even greater impact outside the walls of the hospital, IU Health is challenging team members to get involved in school and neighborhood improvement projects, building sustainable food access points, and creating safety nets for local residents.

“The IU Health Day of Service is a way for team members to reach beyond hospital walls and make a positive impact on the community,” said Joyce Hertko, director of community outreach and engagement at IU Health. “As the state’s largest healthcare system, IU Health feels a responsibility to assist Hoosiers in pursuing a healthy lifestyle. Our team members now have several ways to be a part of that effort.”

In Indianapolis, about 1,200 IU Health Day of Service volunteers will work at several locations in the northwest area neighborhood to clean up parks and playgrounds, paint crosswalks, revitalize community assets and build food boxes to address the issue of healthy food access.

IU Health Day of Service volunteers will also participate in the Junior Achievement JobSpark event on September 26. Volunteers will help students discover what career path they want to take and how to get there. Last year, more than 1,300 IU Health team members worked in Indianapolis to engage over 7,000 students at this event, creating and distributing healthy messages, providing nutritional snacks and engaging students to learn more about the importance of health and wellness to career success.
