U.S. News rates five specialties, including ear nose and throat and geriatrics, among top 50 in nation or high performing
INDIANAPOLIS — U.S. News & World Report has released its 2021-2022 ‘Best Hospitals’ rankings that name Indiana University Health Medical Center among the nation’s top adult hospitals for the 24th consecutive year. According to the rankings, IU Health Medical Center is the No. 1 ranked hospital in Indiana and Indianapolis and the only nationally ranked adult hospital in the state.
To create the rankings U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 32 specialties, procedures and conditions.
For 2021-2022, IU Health Medical Center (Methodist, University and Saxony hospitals) was rated as high performing nationally in three specialties, with another two specialties achieving top 50 national rankings:
- Ear, Nose & Throat—ranked 34th in nation
- Gastroenterology—high performing
- Geriatrics—ranked 48th in nation
- Neurology & Neurosurgery—high performing
- Urology—high performing
U.S. News also rates hospitals for 17 common procedures and conditions and IU Health Medical Center was rated as high performing in nine: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), colon cancer surgery, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, knee replacement, lung cancer surgery and stroke.
Also ranked in Indiana was IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital at No.4. It was rated high performing in six procedures and conditions: congestive heart failure, COPD, diabetes, heart attack, kidney failure, and stroke.
Other IU Health hospitals with high-performing specialties or procedures include IU Health Arnett (COPD, heart attack and heart failure), IU Health Bloomington (kidney failure, heart attack and stroke), IU Health North (orthopedics, heart failure, knee replacement and pneumonia) and IU Health West (geriatrics, urology, pulmonology, kidney failure, COPD, heart failure and pneumonia).
The annual rankings, now in their 32nd year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures.
