Over the weekend, Holli Smith, administrative coordinator, celebrated her ninth year as an IU Health Saxony Hospital team member. She always knew she wanted to work in the medical field, but not as a nurse or a doctor. Smith’s first job right out of high school was working as a receptionist at a chiropractor’s office and loved the administrative side of healthcare. She found her niche while working at a health center assisting the executive director.
On a typical day, Smith assists IU Health Saxony’s Chief Operating Officer, Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Medical Officer by managing their schedules, coordinating meetings with other team members, booking conference rooms and helping them with whatever else they might need.
“I’m usually called the ‘go-to’ person,” Smith said. “If they don’t know where something is or need to reach someone they may not know, they come to me. I think a lot of people come to me because I’m one of the original team members.”
The part of her job Smith enjoys the most is the interaction with team members. Having worked at the hospital for nine years, Smith has learned to adjust to different personalities and leadership.
“Everyone has a different way of doing things,” she said. “How one leader did things might not be how the next leader does them and that’s okay. In my position you just have to learn to go with the flow and be openminded. When leadership changes I ask them what do they want, what do they need, who do they want to meet with, how do they want to run a certain meeting and they tell me and I try my best to make it happen.”
Along with assisting IU Health Saxony leaders, Smith is also on the IU Health Saxony Wellness Committee and Chair of the Culture Committee. As part of these committees, she plans fun events throughout the year such as Popcorn Day, Ice Cream Wednesday and Saxony Olympics to show team members how much they’re appreciated.
Outside of the office, Smith enjoys leading a healthy lifestyle and redecorating her house with her husband.
Another part of her job Smith enjoys is living a mile and a half away from the hospital and being able to go home and see her dogs on her lunch break.
