“Serving people with excellence, compassion, ethics, and positivity” has earned Jessica Journey, IU Health Foundation director, donor experience, a place on the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy’s (AHP) 2020 40 Under 40 list. AHP is the leading industry organization for healthcare philanthropy professionals, with 4,500 members representing 2.200 healthcare facilities worldwide.
“Donor experience is everyone’s job at IU Health Foundation,” said Crystal Miller, Foundation president and IU Health chief philanthropy officer, in her letter of support for Journey’s nomination. “However, we are a successful organization because of the way in which Jessica Journey innovates and excels.”
Among her accomplishments, Journey has transitioned traditional events into immersive experiences that pair IU Health innovators with potential donors of major gifts. She works closely with her team to steward and celebrate all contributions, which builds a pipeline of donors who may start with modest gifts but grow into major donors and bring their families and friends into the Foundation’s orbit.
Journey’s people skills aren’t the whole story, though. In the Foundation’s early days, she partnered with IU Health’s finance and legal teams to create gift agreement templates and an automated gift processing system. She has also led the effort to build contributions to the Team Member Support Fund, which assists IU Health team members facing unexpected financial emergencies.
Journey joined the Foundation in 2018 as manager of Donor Relations; she was promoted to director of Donor Experience in February 2020.
Journey earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Hanover College and her master’s in public affairs from the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs. She became a Certified Fund Raising Executive in 2015 and renewed that certification in 2018. Journey is an advocate for organ donation and social justice.
“As a living kidney donor and a mom to a Riley kid, I'm personally invested in IU Health’s mission to make Indiana healthier,” said Journey. “Working at IU Health is an opportunity to make a positive impact at a size and scale that is incredible. I'm just grateful to be a part of making it happen.”
