IU Health Saxony’s Hip and Knee Center Honored for Commitment to Research

The Hip and Knee Center at IU Health Saxony Hospital has been recognized with the 2020 Richard S. Laskin, MD, Research Award. The award was presented virtually to the team in December during the 32nd Annual Holiday Knee & Hip Course.

This research award comes on the heels of yet another prestigious national award, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) Clinical Research Award, given in recognition of an outstanding clinical paper in the field of hip and knee arthroplasty.

“Cutting-edge research has propelled the IU Health Hip & Knee Center to national prominence, along with nationally recognized patient care and education," said Dr. Michael Meneghini, orthopedic surgeon and director of the Hip & Knee Center. "It is a tremendous honor to have received these two national awards recognizing our clinical research that improves the care and outcomes of hip and knee replacement patients here at IUH and across the US."

These awards add two more accolades for the already nationally renowned team. Performing a high volume of joint replacement procedures each year gives IU Health Hip and Knee Center team members extensive experience in treating the most common cases to the most complex. Patients have traveled to the Fishers hospital from all over the world seeking treatment and surgery.

“We celebrated our 9th anniversary at IU Health Saxony in December, and the IU Health Hip and Knee Center’s rise to national prominence during this time is a testament to the team’s relentless commitment to excellence in research, education and clinical care,” said Chad Dilley, chief operating officer of IU Health Saxony Hospital. “The prominence of this program drives a significant impact in our local community and also draws patients from across the nation. We look forward to continuing to grow this program and seeing the team continue to receive the deserved national recognition.”

The IU Health Hip & Knee Center ranks among the top 10 programs in the country for both length of stay and readmission. This means patients are able to go home faster with the least complications.

The hospital is also home to the state’s only joint replacement fellowship training program, teaching next generation of surgeons the latest techniques in surgical options, and houses the state’s largest joint replacement research program. Physicians have authored more than 80 scientific articles on hip and knee replacement and are invited to present at national and international conferences on the advancements in the hip and knee pain treatment.

“I could not be more proud of our research team, under the direction of Mary Ziemba-Davis, and the residents and medical students here at Indiana University School of Medicine who have conducted practice changing clinical research," Dr. Meneghini continued. "They deserve all the accolades that come from these prestigious national awards.”
