For Craig Brooks, transformation manager for IU Health Physicians, “transformation” is more than a job title. It’s a professional commitment to align outpatient practices with the mission, culture and values of IU Health.
It’s also a personal commitment. In July, Brooks was one of the first IU Health team members to donate to the IU Health Foundation Racial Equity in Healthcare Fund, which supports initiatives that address health inequities among Hoosiers and advance equitable care for all.
Brooks has seen those disparities first-hand. In recent months, he has been coordinating the COVID-19 response plan for IU Health Physicians. The growth in virtual visits revealed disparities in accessing resources necessary to take advantage of this kind of care. At home, after his son began e-learning through the public-school system, Brooks saw how inequity can present barriers to children and families who also struggle with access.
He said he was “primed” and ready to take action when the Racial Equity in Healthcare Fund was announced. “It’s a way for me to feel that my family is helping tackle this challenge,” he said. “We know it’s a problem, and we know we need to do something about it. This is a way for us to have a direct impact.”
Brooks knows it can be challenging to implement new programs or processes, but he believes philanthropy allows creative and unique approaches to increase equity in healthcare and overcome disparities.
“In our mission, we say we’re working to make Indiana one of the healthiest states in the nation,” he says. “We’re not going to be able to achieve that if we continue to have different outcomes in different communities based on race or income.”
Brooks encourages other team members to give as they are able. He says he foresees barriers broken down and obstacles overcome as the fund works to provide access and resources to all Hoosiers, regardless of race, helping them to live longer, healthier lives.
And that, according to Brooks, is a true transformation.
