IU Health urologist offers comprehensive care for male reproductive health

Unlike women, men don’t typically see a doctor on a regular basis for their reproductive health. Dr. Helen Bernie, urologist and director of sexual and reproductive medicine at IU Health North Hospital, is dedicated to providing her male patients with comprehensive care that not only addresses their sexual and reproductive health, but also their overall wellbeing.

“Oftentimes it’s men’s sexual dysfunction that brings them in to see me,” Dr. Bernie said. “But I check everything because I realize that I might be the only doctor they’ve seen in years or are planning on seeing.”

Before visiting Dr. Bernie, Gary Schahet had tried other methods to help his erectile dysfunction, but nothing seemed to work. A year out from his penile implant, Schahet says life is great.

“I was very pleased with the whole process,” Schahet said. “I was able to speak with some previous patients who had the same procedure done and they were so forthcoming. I never gave it a second thought after that.”

Adding dedicated sexual and reproductive services for men was a much-needed expansion of care options at IU Health North.

“Before two years ago, we didn’t have this practice here at IU Health North or really anywhere else,” she said. “As a physician, it’s important to be able to provide your patients with comprehensive care, and these services allow me to do that.”
