Road closures ahead: Utility relocation work begins Sept. 22

Work is underway to clear and prepare the space south of 16^th Street for the new IU Health downtown Indianapolis hospital. The first step involves relocating utilities. To ensure essential utility services are uninterrupted during the construction of the new downtown hospital and can accommodate the new facility, utility relocation work will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 22.

• During phase one of the utility work, a portion of Missouri Street, Senate Avenue and 16^th Street will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2021 – Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022. See the full project map below for more details.
• During phase two of the utility work, the intersection of Capitol Avenue and 16^th Street will be closed Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2021 – Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022.
• During phase three of the utility work, a portion of Capitol Avenue will be closed Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2021- Monday, March 7, 2022.

Expect lane restrictions beginning Aug. 16
Before utility work can begin, a temporary access road is being built to connect the IU Health Methodist Hospital Emergency Department with Capitol and Senate Avenues. This work will ensure public and EMS vehicles maintain regular access to the Emergency Department throughout the utility relocation project and will require the following intermittent lane restrictions starting Monday, Aug. 16:

• One southbound lane on the west side of Capitol Ave. will be restricted from Monday, Aug. 16 – Wednesday, Aug. 25
• One westbound lane on 16^th St. will be restricted from Wednesday, Aug. 25 – Monday, Aug. 30
• One eastbound lane on 16^th St. will be restricted from Monday, Aug. 30 – Saturday, Sept. 4
