Orthopedics & Sports Medicine

At Indiana University Health, we are dedicated to reducing pain caused by conditions and injuries of the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles to help you heal more quickly. Our orthopedic and sports medicine physicians treat the full range of orthopedic and sports-related conditions, including concussion, fractures, tendon and ligament injury, back and neck pain, age-related degeneration, cancerous tumors and traumatic injury. For patients suffering from arthritis and joint pain, we offer the latest surgical techniques, including total joint replacement and revision joint replacement.

Indiana University Health West Hospital Orthopedics & Sports Medicine offers comprehensive care in a comfortable healing environment. Our physicians and caregivers use a multidisciplinary approach for the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries. Our team of healthcare professionals will work with you to design an individualized treatment plan.

The Orthopedics & Sports Medicine team at IU Health West Hospital evaluates all treatment options for your care; when possible, we prefer to treat our patients through nonsurgical solutions. However, if surgery is the right option for you, our surgeons are experienced in the treatment of all musculoskeletal conditions.

Since sports-related injuries have become common among today's active population, IU Health West Hospital provides care for everyone from recreational to professional athletes. In addition to offering specialized assessment and treatment for sports-related injuries, our sports medicine specialists also provide injury-prevention education.

Joint Treatment

Our skill and expertise allows us to accurately diagnose debilitating joint pain, as well as develop a care plan that fits your individual needs. This process, which brings together an integrated team of experts, enables us to properly evaluate your condition, prepare you mentally and physically for a procedure and then monitor and manage your entire pre- and post-surgical process, if necessary. This concept returns you to your maximum function quickly and safely.

For patients who would benefit from total or partial joint replacement of the knee, hip or shoulder, IU Health West Hospital provides the care of some of the region’s most highly skilled physicians. Patients participate in a comprehensive joint replacement orientation in order to understand all facets of their care, including how to prepare for surgery, information about the procedure and hospital stay, and how to prepare in advance for post-surgery recovery and rehabilitation.

IU Health West Hospital has received designation as a Blue Distinction Plus (BDC+) Knee and Hip Replacement provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. This distinction recognizes facilities for both their expertise and cost efficiency in delivering specialty care.

IU Health West Hospital is a participant of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)’s Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model (CJR). Federally mandated, CJR aims to support better and more efficient care for beneficiaries undergoing hip, knee, and ankle replacements through bundled payment and quality measurement for care associated with the surgical procedure. The goal is to encourage hospitals, physicians, and post-acute care providers to work collaboratively to improve the quality and coordination of care from admission through recovery. For more information on CJR and to find a list of our existing CJR Collaborators, please visit IU Health Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model (CJR) Program.

Rehabilitation Services

The Orthopedics & Sports Medicine specialists at IU Health West Hospital recognize that rehabilitation is more than applying a brace or using a therapy technique. Our rehabilitation services include a comprehensive program designed to eliminate the effects of your injury or musculoskeletal problem—and help prevent the problem from returning.

We employ a variety of techniques designed to restore normal strength, motion and flexibility and to reduce pain. Our therapists' goal is to achieve optimal function for every patient, and they understand that the relationship they build with each individual patient is important. That is why you will work with the same one to two therapists throughout the course of your treatment.

The physical therapy team includes therapists who specialize in wound care and sports performance, in addition to providing excellent care for patients pre- and post-surgery, or post-injury.
