The framework of the human body is comprised of hundreds of joints and muscles. When even one of these intricate connections is injured, whether by trauma or degenerative disease, your whole body can feel the effects. At Indiana University Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, we know you want relief, and we’re committed to helping reduce your pain. From your first appointment through treatment, rehabilitation and follow-up, we provide high-quality, compassionate care while we help return you to your previous level of activity quickly and safely—so you can get back to doing what really matters.
Our highly skilled physicians treat the entire musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, muscles and the spine. Our patients come from all demographics—from young or professional athletes to those with tumors, trauma or musculoskeletal disorders. Whenever possible, we exhaust non-operative treatment before recommending surgery, but when it becomes necessary, our surgeons provide advanced joint replacements, reconstruction, and minimally invasive spine surgeries.
As a nationally ranked orthopedic program in Indiana, according to U.S.News & World Report, we’ve partnered with the Indiana University School of Medicine to combine the most innovative treatments with the latest technology, ensuring our patients receive individualized and comprehensive care.
Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Treatment
IU Health Orthopedics provides nationally recognized expertise in joint replacement and revision surgery for knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, hands, ankles and feet.
Our dedicated joint replacement specialists use cutting-edge therapies and treatment options to speed patient recovery times and reduce pain. We perform a high volume of surgical joint replacement procedures each year. This extensive experience enables specialists at IU Health Orthopedics to excel at effectively treating arthritis and joint pain—from the most common cases to the most complex procedures. Have a question? Ask an IU Health expert.
If you or a family member has experienced or suspects a concussion, IU Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine has certified physicians to provide concussion assessment and treatment. Law now requires any student athlete suspected of having a concussion to be removed from the game or practice and “evaluated by a licensed healthcare provider trained in the evaluation and management of concussions and head injuries.” Our ImPACT certified physicians conveniently located throughout the state can validate the injury using the ImPACT Test helping to manage your concussion more efficiently.
Procedures can be performed on the hip, knee, shoulder, ankle, elbow and finger. And if revision surgery is ever needed, we can repair and replace the worn-out implant. Our physicians have performed thousands of these procedures, always with the goal of returning you to freedom of mobility.
The discipline treats patients with benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) tumors of bones and muscles, as well as spinal and extremity soft tissue tumors.
Orthopedic trauma specialists at Indiana University Health have proven experience treating a continuum of trauma cases—from more common injuries to the most complex trauma cases. Our trauma physicians work closely with other specialty physicians, as needed, to develop a tailored and comprehensive care plan for patients with traumatic injuries. Our specialists provide expert care, including both surgical and non-surgical treatment options, for adults and children with acute injuries or complications. Services include, but are not limited to the following:
- Difficult fractures of the upper and lower extremities, including open and complex periarticular injuries
- Pelvic and acetabular (hip) fractures
- Geriatric or fragility fractures
- Extremity injuries requiring hyperbaric oxygen
- Non-unions (fractures that did not heal)
- Mal-unions (fractures that healed in poor position)
- Infections and osteomyelitis (bone infection)
- Arthritis after fracture
A final critical component of the treatment plan, “rehab” aims to restore function and mobility. Because this process is not instantaneous, our team is committed to achieving measurable progress along the road to recovery.
Spinal surgeries can now be performed with minimally invasive techniques that correct spinal disorders and chronic back and neck pain, while sparing surrounding soft tissues. A smaller-incision, minimally invasive procedure means a faster recovery, and less pain following surgery.

Choosing the right doctor can be difficult, and when it comes to orthopedics, you want to make sure you are making the best decision possible. There are some important questions to consider when selecting an orthopedic specialist or evaluating a sports medicine program. Making sure your physician provides the latest technologies and techniques is one consideration that will help you make the right choice based on your specific needs.
Navigated Total Knee Replacement
Improved mobility and range of motion for total knee replacement patients are just two benefits of the new navigation technology now offered at IU Health Saxony Hospital. The system uses an infrared camera and instruments along with unique tracking software to continually monitor the position and alignment of the implant components in relation to the patient’s anatomy. The computer then analyzes and displays data on a monitor to provide the surgeon with the angles, lines and measurements needed to accurately align the prosthetic knee.
Joint replacement, like all fields of medicine, has seen great advancements in recent years in both the types of materials being used and the ways in which surgeries are performed. Since joint replacement is a life-changing procedure, knowing the highly skilled team at IU Health is experienced with the many new medical advancements will bring you peace of mind that you’re making the right choice and will receive exceptional care.
