IU Health Medical Device Security Testing Lab

A state-of-the-art lab for medical device security testing and research

Medical device security v2

IU Health’s new cutting-edge medical device testing lab, located at the 16 Tech Innovation District in downtown Indianapolis, was founded in response to the growing number of healthcare cybersecurity attacks.

The vision for the lab is to have a state-of-the-art center for testing and researching medical device security. A lab environment that fully replicates the conditions of real-live clinical settings to test, validate and improve medical device security standards.

About the Lab

The vision for the lab is to have a state-of-the-art center for testing and researching medical device security. A lab environment that fully replicates the conditions of real-live clinical settings to test, validate and improve medical device security standards.

Team

Collaboration

IU Health will be collaborating with clinical practitioners, manufacturers, academics, clinical engineers, and security professionals to advance medical device security. This collaboration will foster an environment of innovation and creation of security solutions and standards to protect patients.

Research

Research

By working with researchers, clinicians, security experts, academic institutions, and manufacturers we will not only discover threats, but also develop countermeasures to improve medical device security and patient safety. We will seek to discover new threats and simulate those attacks to train clinicians to be able to recognize the signs of a cyber-attack on medical devices.

Testing

Testing

The lab utilizes a variety of techniques for testing medical devices. These devices (listed below) are utilized at IU Health facilities and other healthcare systems across the country.

The tests will replicate the same tools, techniques, and procedures used by cybercriminals. All testing and research conducted at the lab will be in a simulated clinical environment. The results from our testing will be submitted to peer-reviewed journal articles and shared with the larger cybersecurity community.

Devices We Test

  • Electrocardiography (ECG) devices
  • Anesthesia Machines
  • Patient Monitors
  • Infusion Pumps
  • Peripherals (Hardware/Software)
  • Network equipment
