Press Release

Visitor restrictions to begin at IU Health locations

December 13, 2024

Due to a rise in reported cases of flu and other respiratory viruses, IU Health will begin limiting visitors at its Indianapolis-area healthcare facilities to prevent spreading and protect patients and team members.

  • Beginning Monday, Dec. 16, the following hospitals will limit visitors.
    • IU Health Methodist Hospital
    • IU Health University Hospital
    • Riley Hospital for Children
    • IU Health North Hospital
    • IU Health West Hospital
    • IU Health Saxony Hospital

IU Health Infection Prevention recommends wearing a mask during direct patient care due to the high levels of circulating viruses in the community.

The following restrictions will remain in effect until viral illness rates decline:

  • Visitors younger than 18 years will not be permitted on patient units.
  • Visitors who have flu-like or COVID-19 symptoms, such as fever, cough, chills or muscle aches, will not be allowed to visit patients.
  • Visitors, vendors, volunteers and team members must be vigilant about hand washing and covering coughs.

Additional measures will be implemented at Riley Hospital for Children, including:

  • Only parents or legal guardians plus four designated adults identified by the parents/legal guardians will be allowed to visit and be on the patient units.
  • In the Maternity units, 6 designated visitors will be allowed. The designated visitors must remain the same throughout the inpatient hospital stay.
  • Only 2 visitors at a time will be allowed in a patient room. Siblings and children less than 18 years of age will not be permitted on the patient units.
