We are pleased to partner with Indiana University School of Medicine, helping to train future healthcare providers. At IU Health Internal Medicine Residency Center - Bloomington, you’ll be seen by Medical Residents—physicians who have earned their medical degree and are undergoing additional training.
A medical resident is a physician who has graduated from medical school and is currently receiving advanced training in a specific area of medicine, such as emergency medicine, internal medicine or other specialties. Our internal medicine resident physicians work under the supervision of IU Health board-certified doctors, known as “attending physicians,” to grow their skills and knowledge in a medical specialty.
Internal medicine residents care for patients age 18 and older. They write treatment plans, review test results and are an active part of your healthcare team. Because they work closely with our highly-skilled attending physicians, you receive the benefit of multiple medical professionals reviewing your care. Both the resident and the attending physician will address your diagnosis and treatment plan.
Working together, our residents and attending physicians provide a range of services, including:
- Full-service primary care
- Well visits and physicals
- Preventative services
- Treatment of acute illnesses and injuries
- Management of chronic illness
- Coordination of complex care with specialists
- Immunizations
- Same day Urgent Care by appointment
- Women’s health services
This is a three-year program for the resident physician. After program completion, resident physicians may decide to join the local IU Health team, or they may move to a different location. In the event they move, their patients will need to establish care with a new physician.
