Anyone who has had a kidney stone in the past knows it’s not something they want to experience again. The Kidney Stone Center at IU Health Southern Indiana Physicians aims to help those with a past history of kidney stones prevent future stones and improve their health.
What is a kidney stone?
A kidney stone is a solid piece of material that forms when excreted substances from the urine crystallize. Stones may remain in the kidney or break loose and travel down the urinary tract. Smaller stones may pass all the way out of the body, but larger stones can get stuck and cause great pain.
About one million people in the U.S. are treated for kidney stones each year. And, once a person has one kidney stone, he or she is more likely to develop additional stones in the future.
Focus on prevention
The Kidney Stone Center at IU Health Southern Indiana Physicians works with those affected by kidney stones to help prevent future occurrences. Through a team approach, the Center works with patients individually to determine the type of kidney stones they have, and then help the patient make lifestyle, diet and medication changes to reduce the risk of developing future kidney stones.
Because kidney stone prevention includes looking at a person’s overall health, diet and medications, our Center uses a team approach that includes a urologist, a pharmacist, a registered dietitian, and access to primary care physicians.
Urologist
The urologist is the team leader and is a specialist in disorders of the kidneys and urinary tract. This physician will review your history of kidney stones and monitor your care throughout your appointments at the center.
Pharmacist
While lifestyle changes are important in preventing future kidney stones, medications can also help reduce the risk. The pharmacist works with patients individually to review all of their medications and determine what might work best given their history and health status.
Registered dietitian
Changes in diet can have a big impact on reducing the risk of future kidney stones. The registered dietitian works with patients to discuss diet changes that can lead to improved health as well as how dehydration can increase the risk of developing stones.
Primary Care Physician
The primary care physician can be pulled in as a part of the team based on patients’ needs to manage additional medical conditions if the patient doesn’t already have a primary care provider.
The Kidney Stone Center at IU Health Southern Indiana Physicians is focused on prevention. We don’t want to treat kidney stones, we want to prevent them. Because of our focus on prevention, our patients have the opportunity to reduce their risk for future kidney stones, and achieve a healthier life.
