Frequently Asked Questions about Laboratory Services

How long you should fast before a blood draw depends on what you are being tested for. It is typically recommended to go eight hours without eating. For lipid panels, it could be up to 12 hours. Fasting is important because when you eat, you absorb nutrients into your bloodstream, which can affect your blood test results. Ask your doctor what you can eat or drink and how soon to fast before a blood test.

Yes, there are special blood tests that can identify chemicals in our blood that are markers for tumors. For example, the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test measures the levels of a protein made by the prostate, which can be a sign of prostate tumors. There are also tests that can identify markers for ovarian, pancreatic, colon and testicular tumors. Your doctor will need to do additional testing beyond blood tests to confirm a cancer diagnosis.

There are often several laboratories spread throughout the community that offer blood tests. Find the closest IU Health Lab near you.

A blood test is the most common medical test ordered. It can measure your overall health, monitor how your organs are functioning, confirm pregnancy or screen for diseases like cancer, infection, heart disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS or blood disorders. Blood tests also help doctors monitor treatments you are having to see if they are working. Your doctor may also request a blood draw for genetic testing to see if you inherited markers for specific conditions

Tests for sexually transmitted disease or illness (STI or STD) can vary depending on what you are testing for. The test itself may take only a few minutes, depending on whether it’s a urine test, blood test, physical exam or oral or genital swab. Based on the type of test, you could have results within 20 minutes with a rapid HIV test or within a few days for most other tests. Some more complex tests can take up to a week to return results.
