Overview
When a limb is damaged by trauma, infection or cancer, amputation is not always necessary. Orthopedic trauma surgery can provide preservation and reconstruction to save your limb.
What to Expect
You might need limb preservation and reconstruction care if you have:
- Malunion or deformity: A bone fracture that hasn’t healed properly and causes pain, limited function or disability
- Nonunion: A bone fracture that hasn’t healed
- Osteomyelitis: A bone infection caused by bacteria, virus or parasites
Limb preservation and reconstruction offers the best chance of regaining full function of your limb and avoiding amputation. Services include:
Orthopedic trauma surgery
Depending on your injury, you may be able to have minimally invasive surgery, with smaller incisions, less pain and faster healing.
Surgery for limb infection (osteomyelitis)
You may need hyperbaric oxygen therapy to send extra oxygen to the affected area and improve healing.
Surgery to repair previous reconstruction
If you had previous reconstruction surgery or fracture repair that still causes pain or limited use of a limb, you may benefit from complex reconstruction surgery.
