Biography

Garrett Ungerer, MD, joined IU Health in 2026 as a fellowship-trained endourologist and minimally invasive surgeon specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of urologic conditions. He is dedicated to providing personalized care and developing treatment plans that align with each patient's goals and preferences.

Dr. Ungerer chose urology because it combines technical precision with the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on patients' lives. He values the specialty's unique blend of surgery, oncology and long-term patient relationships, helping individuals navigate sensitive and often life-changing diagnoses while improving their quality of life. His approach to care is grounded in a simple philosophy: always put patients first.

His clinical interests include:

  • Minimally invasive surgery including robotics
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and enlarged prostate
  • Endourology and kidney stones
  • Reconstructive urology
  • Urologic cancers (Bladder, Kidney, Prostate, Upper Tract Urothelial)
  • Hydronephrosis
  • Surgery for urinary incontinence (male and female)

Dr. Ungerer appreciates the intellectual challenges of urology and the ability to make a tangible difference in patients' daily lives. He is committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based care while partnering with patients to find solutions that best fit their individual needs.

Outside of work, Dr. Ungerer enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. He looks forward to putting down roots in the Lafayette-West Lafayette community, which he believes is an ideal place to raise a family. In his free time, he enjoys sports, woodworking and music.
