Biography

John Callaghan MD, PhD, is the Director of the IU Health Precision Medicine Clinic. He works with a mixed discipline team from the Indiana University Institute of Personalized Medicine to bring precision (personalized) medicine into the IU Health portfolio of advanced specialty care. Working with patients who do not respond to medications as expected, Dr. Callaghan uses precision medicine to customize medication selection and dose.

Dr. Callaghan is board certified in internal medicine and clinical pharmacology and an associate professor in medicine, and pharmacology and toxicology at Indiana University School of Medicine. In addition to directing the IU Health Precision Medicine clinic, he advises the IU Health Precision Genomics (Oncology) team and the IU Pharmacogenomics Laboratory. He also serves as a member of the National Veterans Affairs Pharmacogenetics Committee and the national Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC).

Dr. Callaghan has a PhD in pharmacology/clinical pharmacology from the University of Minnesota. He worked at Eli Lilly and Company as a clinical trial investigator and as director of the U.S. Clinical Pharmacology and Exploratory Medicine Service. While at Lilly, Dr. Callaghan was an adjunct faculty member in the IU School of Medicine Division of Clinical Pharmacology. After he retired from Eli Lilly and joined the division, he served as co-director of the NIH T-32 Clinical Pharmacology Fellowship program. Dr. Callaghan has served as a hospitalist, associate chief of staff for research and development (Health Services R&D) at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center and associate dean for VA research for IU School of Medicine. He participated in the VA Million Veteran Program in Indiana and VA Cooperative Studies Programs and was an active member on several institutional boards (Simon Cancer Center, Regenstrief Institute, and Indiana Institute for Medical Research).
