Biography
Dr. Richard S. Mangus’ area of clinical practice is liver, intestine and multi-organ transplants for adults and children. He is the surgical director of the IU Health intestine transplant program and pediatric liver transplant program. In addition to performing complex liver and multivisceral transplants, he frequently operates on patients who have inadequate function of their intestine and are dependent upon parenteral nutrition due to complex abdominal pathology, including extensive loss of their intestine, complex fistulas and frozen abdomen.
His research interests include liver and intestine transplantation, extended criteria organ donors, and intestine failure and rehabilitation. Dr. Mangus maintains a large clinical research database and has published extensively in the field of adult and pediatric clinical transplant outcomes.
Dr. Mangus earned his medical degree from Organ Health & Science University and a masters degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed his internship, residency and abdominal transplant fellowship at the Indiana University School of Medicine. In 2006, he joined the IU School of Medicine where he is a professor of surgery.
In addition to awards for his research and teaching, Dr. Mangus was honored to receive the Red Shoes Award in 2007 and 2017 for outstanding accomplishments and contributions to family-centered care at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.
