Arnett Cancer Center receives national breast cancer re-accreditation

December 27, 2023

Lafayette, Ind. – The Indiana University Health Arnett Cancer Center has received re-accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a quality program administered by the American College of Surgeons.

“Being diagnosed with breast cancer and choosing a treatment plan is a deeply personal and often emotional experience,” says IU Health Arnett breast surgeon Sidney Bruce, MD. “Everyone wants the best care possible for themselves or their loved one, and this accreditation is an indication that by choosing the IU Health Arnett team, they are choosing the best.”

To achieve this voluntary NAPBC re-accreditation, the Arnett team demonstrated continual compliance with the NAPBC’s high standards for leadership, clinical services, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement for patients.

“We are proud to be Greater Lafayette’s only cancer care team to receive this important accreditation, says Arnett oncologist Vijaya Kakani, MD.

Breast centers seeking NAPBC accreditation undergo a site visit every three years.

Patients receiving care at an NAPBC-accredited center have access to:

  • Comprehensive care, including a multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options.
  • Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options.
  • Mental health support, financial guidance, survivorship care and other long-term services.
  • Ongoing monitoring of care and lifelong follow up.

In particular, the IU Health Arnett Cancer Center offers patients access to the most advanced radiation therapy treatment options to more precisely target cancer cells, precision genomics to create a personalized treatment plan and a high-risk breast cancer prevention program to help more women prevent, detect, treat and beat breast cancer at its earliest stages.
