IU Health Arnett Hospital receives verification as a Level III Trauma Center

Indiana University Health Arnett Hospital was reverified as a Level III trauma center, as it continues to provide high-quality trauma care.

“Verification is only awarded after a rigorous demonstration of a hospital’s critical resources to provide optimal care of an injured patient,” said Ruban Nirmalan, MD, FACS, general surgeon and trauma medical director at IU Health Arnett.

A rigorous on-site review of IU Health Arnett Hospital’s trauma capabilities was conducted by the America College of Surgeons (ACS). During the visit the trauma team demonstrated an ability to provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, surgery, intensive care and stabilization of injured patients and emergency room operations. Other criteria for sustaining Level III status include:

• The prompt availability of general surgeons and anesthesiologists;
• Providing back-up care for rural and community hospitals:
• Incorporating a comprehensive quality assessment program; and
• 24-hour immediate coverage by emergency medicine physicians.

This achievement recognizes IU Health Arnett's dedication to providing optimal care for injured patients.

Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1987, the Committee on Trauma’s Consultation/Verification Program for Hospitals promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the hospital resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients.

As part of its Level III status, IU Health Arnett provides educational opportunities in trauma care for the community including Stop the Bleed training and various prevention education and screening events.
