IU Health Bloomington celebrates inaugural Dr. R. Kent Moseman Memorial Scholarship

May 27, 2025

At 4 pm on Thursday, May 22, friends, colleagues, family and loved ones gathered at the IU Health Bloomington Chapel to celebrate the first two recipients of the Dr. R. Kent Moseman Memorial Scholarship, Giada Marchionne and Gavin Kocher.

“The amount of people in this room that are here to honor our two recipients, as well as Dr. Moseman and his family, is impressive,” said Jonathan Surdam, MD, IU Health Orthopedic Surgeon. “The applicants we had this year were outstanding, but I really think that two of these individuals stood out and we want to say good luck to Giada and Gavin as they set out on the next phase of what we're sure will be an exciting and challenging adventure.”

“On behalf of Kent and the family, I want to congratulate Giada and Gavin,” said Toni Moseman, Dr. Moseman’s widow. “We're very excited to see the good that they will accomplish in the world.”

The Dr. R. Kent Moseman Memorial Scholarship was created to honor the memory of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Moseman by supporting the education and development of local students interested in the healthcare field.

“I think the scholarship is important because it continues to keep the memory of Kent alive and emphasize what he contributed to the community,” said Moseman. “This is something that makes his passing less of a tragedy.”

“Dr. Moseman’s influence and the approach to healthcare that he used impacted my career, as well as the careers of many of my partners,” said Surdam. “He was a selfless, sincere, respected and admired professional whose work contributed enormously to the growth of orthopedic practice in south-central Indiana.”

This impact inspired his former colleagues—Jonathan Surdam, MD; Aaron Mast, MD; Timothy Steiner, MD; Mark Hansen, MD; and Otto Wickstrom, MD—to create a fund in his memory. The IU Health Foundation and team leader Dave Sturgis were also instrumental in making the scholarship a reality.

Eligibility requirements for the Dr. R. Kent Moseman Memorial Scholarship are that the applicant is a Monroe County resident, have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, is pursuing a degree in the healthcare field and is continuing their education at an Indiana institution. Winners receive a $7,000 scholarship, which will be given in $3,500 increments over to consecutive semesters as long as they maintain their eligibility.
