July 29, 2025

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana University Health Medical Center has been named among U.S. News & World Report’s 2025-2026 Best Hospitals edition as a High Performing hospital for Cancer, Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Geriatrics and Neurology & Neurosurgery. This is the highest distinction a hospital can earn as part of U.S. News’ Best Hospitals Procedures & Conditions ratings.

U.S. News’ annual Best Hospital rankings are designed to assist patients and their healthcare providers in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or elective procedures.

For the second consecutive year, IU Health Medical Center (comprised of IU Health Methodist, University and Fishers hospitals) was recognized as Best Regional Hospitals for Community Access, which highlights the important and necessary work hospitals are doing to improve care for all communities. Also, IU Health Medical Center tied for number one in the Indianapolis Metro area.

U.S. News rates hospitals for 22 common procedures and conditions, and IU Health Medical Center was rated as high performing nationally in eight procedures and conditions:

  • Back surgery (spinal fusion)
  • Colon cancer surgery
  • Diabetes
  • Heart failure
  • Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma
  • Lung cancer surgery
  • Pneumonia
  • Stroke

“We recognize how important these rankings are to patients and their families when making healthcare decisions, and we're proud to be consistently recognized for our continued commitment to providing excellent care,” said Michele Saysana, president of IU Health’s Metro Region. “As Indiana’s only academic medical center, we have the honor and responsibility of caring for patients with the most complex health challenges, and this latest recognition reflects our progress toward achieving our vision of improving the health of all Hoosiers."

Other IU Health hospitals rated as high performing for specialties or procedures and conditions are:

  • IU Health Bloomington: High Performing in Heart Attack
  • IU Health North: High Performing in Prostate Cancer
  • IU Health West: High Performing in Pneumonia

U.S. News evaluated more than 4,400 hospitals across 15 adult specialties and 22 procedures and conditions; only one third of them earned an award. To determine the Best Hospitals, U.S. News analyzed each hospital’s performance based on objective measures such as risk-adjusted mortality rates, preventable complications and level of nursing care. The Best Hospitals Specialty rankings methodology and Procedures & Conditions ratings methodology measure patient outcomes using data from over 800 million records of patient care.
