The flu is a contagious and potentially serious respiratory illness that can lead to serious complications. While a flu shot may not mean complete immunity from getting sick, it can in most cases prevent or significantly lessen the severity of symptoms.
“With the current COVID-19 pandemic, it’s even more crucial this year to get your annual flu vaccine,” said IU Health family medicine physician Mecca Maxey-Smartt, MD. “You can get both influenza and COVID-19 at the same time or in the same season, which could have a disastrous impact on your health.”
As peak flu season quickly approaches, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone six months and older get the annual flu vaccination. Vaccination is especially important for groups that are more vulnerable to serious complications from the flu, including those who are:
- Pregnant
- Adults 65 and older
- Young children between six months and eight years
- Individuals with certain underlying medical conditions
