Safety and celebrations should go hand-in-hand

April 23, 2025

Special events, like the upcoming Little 500 races, are a time for celebration and fun. IU Health Bloomington Emergency Medicine specialists encourage participants to also remember to stay safe while enjoying the festivities.

“We typically see an increase in Emergency department visits over the week leading up to the big race, as well as during race weekend,” said Robert Adams, DO, Emergency Medicine specialist and Acute Care Service Line Medical Executive. “Lacerations, fractures, dislocations, abrasions and alcohol-related concerns are some of the more common issues we see during this time.”

Hydrating with plenty of water, not overindulging or drinking unknown beverages, and having a designated sober driver are three of his top tips for stay safe for this week and events throughout the rest of the year.

Creating a safety plan for your group is also important. Below are just a few things to do before you start the festivities:

  • Agree on a meeting spot in case you’re separated
  • Memorize phone numbers in case you can’t use your phone
  • Plan safe transportation ahead of time, such as designating a sober designated driver
  • Use the buddy system, walk as a group and don’t leave individuals behind
  • Share your location with your group if you’re able to do so
  • Take breaks to rest
  • Consider bringing Naloxone in case someone experiences an overdose

“If you or someone else needs emergency assistance, please call 911 or go to your closest emergency department,” said Dr. Adams. “Emergency services teams both out in the community and in the hospital are here to help.”

Walk-in offices, Urgent Cares and Virtual Care appointments are also options for time-sensitive health concerns that aren’t life-threatening.
